When a user is creating a Campaign or Drip Campaign, they will be prompted with the option to upload contacts via a .csv (comma-separated values) file. A .csv file is a text file that has a specific format which allows data to be saved in a table structured format or file type like Excel.

Note: Emissary recommends limiting .csv files to no more than 250 recipients. If you are working with a large file, we recommend breaking it down into separate files of 250 or fewer recipients and uploading them separately.

Adding CSV Files:

Below is what a user will see when choosing to upload recipients via a .csv file:

Once "From CSV file" is selected, the user will need to upload the file by drag and drop, or by clicking the paperclip icon to locate the file on their computer. Then, select "Next step".

On the following page, users will need to tell the system whether the first row on the file contains data or headers.

Next, make sure the variable drop-down menus match the headers you've included, or that "Do not import" is selected.

Only a phone number is required for contacts to be included in a campaign, but other variables can be added and plugged into the message creation to personalize mass messages.

Note: If the user opts to import variables that do not exist on every contact in the .csv file, those with missing data will be flagged as invalid with an error message "Missing data" and cannot be included in the campaign.

Either fill in the missing data on the .csv file, or choose "Do not import" for those headers via the variables column shown above.

Once a Campaign has been scheduled, all recipients added through a .csv file will be saved as contacts in your system automatically and with any variables you included, if they weren't already there.
