Extern uses Stripe to securely process all subscription payments. If your card isn’t going through, it could be because Stripe doesn’t support payments in your country or your card provider hasn’t authorized the charge.
Step One: Check with your card provider
Contact your bank or card issuer to confirm:
International or online payments are enabled.
Recurring / subscription charges are allowed.
There are no restrictions on foreign transactions or USD payments.
Often the issue resolves once the provider authorizes the charge.
Step Two: Use a virtual dollar card if Stripe is unsupported
If your country is not supported by Stripe, or your card still can’t be authorized, you can use a virtual dollar (USD) card or multi-currency account that works across borders.
Below is a link to a guide showing how to set up a virtual USD card with Wise, one of the more popular providers:
Wise’s official virtual card page also walks through the steps to order and use it. Wise
Recommended virtual card providers
These virtual cards function like Visa or Mastercard debit cards and are commonly accepted by Stripe:
Provider | Virtual / USD Card Available | Evidence on Subscription / Recurring Payment Support | Notes & Caveats |
Wise (formerly TransferWise) | Yes — Wise offers a multi-currency virtual debit card. | Yes, they support recurring card payments: Wise has a “Recurring card payments” section in their help docs. | Although Wise supports recurring payments on its cards, some merchants may reject prepaid/debit cards or virtual cards as a subscription payment method. |
Revolut | Yes — Revolut offers virtual/debit cards. | It depends: Revolut’s disposable virtual cards cannot be used for recurring payments. | If you use a non-disposable (standard) virtual card, recurring payments are more likely to be accepted — but merchant policy and card type matter. |
Pyypl | Yes — Pyypl issues virtual prepaid / Visa (USD among other currencies) cards. | Yes: Pyypl’s documentation explicitly states you can use their virtual cards to pay subscriptions. | Because they are prepaid and virtual, ensuring sufficient balance and stability of the card (i.e. not changing card number frequently) is essential for subscription reliability. |
Chipper Cash | (Limited public documentation) | I did not find definitive, reliable sources confirming recurring/subscription support in Chipper Cash’s card offering. | You’d want to check directly with Chipper Cash or their terms of card issuance in your country. |
Grey.co | (Limited public documentation) | I found no public confirmation that Grey.co’s virtual cards support recurring billing. | As above, check with Grey’s support or terms in your region. |
Eversend / Klasha | Yes (multi-currency, reloadable cards) | I found no public documentation explicitly confirming support for recurring subscription payments. | Their cards are reloadable, so in many cases they might work — but merchant acceptance of prepaid or virtual cards is a key constraint. |
Tip: Ensure the card you choose supports recurring (subscription) payments, not just one-time transactions.
Step Three: Complete your subscription
Once you have a working virtual card:
Return to the Extern checkout page.
Enter your virtual card details.
Confirm your subscription plan.
Your subscription becomes active once the payment succeeds.
