Learning Paths in the LMS – Overview, Creation, and Management Guide

Written by Sveta Vyatkina

A Learning Path is a structured and curated sequence of courses designed to guide learners through a topic in a logical, progressive order. It helps organisations deliver training that moves learners from foundational knowledge to more advanced skills in a clear and measurable way.

Learning Paths are commonly used to standardise training across teams, departments, or the entire organisation.

A pre-made Learning Path is a ready-to-use training programme created by Alison’s content team. These paths are built using existing Alison courses and are designed around common learning goals such as onboarding, leadership, or digital skills.

Pre-made Learning Paths allow organisations to quickly assign high-quality training without needing to build content manually.

Managing Learning Paths

Super Admins and Admins (with the required permissions) can create, edit, and delete Learning Paths directly from the LMS dashboard.

Group Managers cannot modify Learning Paths. They can only assign existing paths and track learner progress. If changes are required, they must be requested from a Super Admin or Admin.

All users with appropriate access can manage Learning Paths from the Learning Path section in the LMS dashboard, available via the left-hand menu.

How to create a Learning Path

To create a new Learning Path, go to the Learning Path page and select Create New Learning Path.

You will have two options:

  • Select from Pre-Made Learning Paths – Choose one or more existing paths and combine courses into a new customised structure. You can remove or add courses from Alison’s full library of 6,000+ courses before saving.

  • Create a Custom Learning Path – Build a path from scratch by selecting courses from Alison’s full course catalogue. Filters can be used to quickly find relevant courses by category.

After selecting courses, proceed to the next step where you must:

  • Enter a unique Learning Path name (required)

  • Add an optional description and tags for easier search and management

  • Upload a thumbnail if required

Once completed, you can either assign the Learning Path immediately or save it for later assignment.

How to edit a Learning Path

Both pre-made and custom Learning Paths can be edited by Admins or Super Admins.

To edit a Learning Path:

  1. Locate the Learning Path in the Learning Path section

  2. Click the edit (pen) icon

  3. Modify the title, description, course list, order, or associated skills

To update the course structure, open the Learning Path editor to add or remove courses from Alison’s full course library, then save changes.

Important: If you edit a Learning Path that has already been assigned, changes will apply to all users assigned to it. This may affect reporting and learner progress, depending on whether the path has already been completed or is still in progress.

How to delete or remove a Learning Path

Learning Paths can be deleted from the Learning Path page using the delete option in the action menu.

If you only want to remove a Learning Path from a specific group, deletion is not required. You can simply unassign it from that group.
