Reveal source notes for generated commentary
Fathom’s Commentary Writer allows you to easily identify where results come from or how they were calculated.
Within the generated commentary, figures will be highlighted in light blue. Hover your cursor over the figures to reveal their source:

When you add generated commentary to a report, the blue-highlighted source notes will remain in the commentary and be viewable in the online version of the report.
If you see a figure without a blue highlight, it has already been highlighted earlier in the same piece of commentary. You can hover over the earlier result to see its source.
Once a portion of commentary highlighted in light blue has been manually edited, the source note will be removed. Blue highlights indicate results the tool can trace. If you edit those numbers, they become plain text and lose traceability.
What if the results don't look correct?
Check the following to determine if the results used by the Commentary Writer should be calculated differently:
1. Is the necessary data included in the selected reporting components?
Example: If you ask for commentary on revenue trends, the reporting components you select for commentary must include revenue results for more than one period.
2. Are the underlying results correct?
Example: The generated commentary shows the difference between this month’s Expenses and last month’s Expenses. However, this month’s Expense result does not seem to be correct, so the calculation is incorrect.
If the underlying results or metrics are not correct, please go through this checklist.
❗Notice: All commentary generated with the Commentary Writer is static. Generated commentary does not update when your data updates. After updating your data, you can use the tool to generate new commentary or enter the new figures with placeholders. If you type in a new result, the blue-highlighted source note will disappear.
3. Does the Commentary Writer have the correct underlying results, but is using a formula that differs from your preferred formula?
You can prompt the tool to calculate the results using your preferred formula:
