Experience Makers are the local experts who create and lead Fernwayer Experiences.
They are more than guides.
They include photographers, fishermen, artisans, historians, chefs, architects, journalists, naturalists, winemakers, farmers, designers, and more — people whose knowledge, point of view, and connection to a place give every Experience its depth.
Fernwayer doesn't simply list an Experience Maker's existing tour; it shapes each Experience with them, around their story, their skills, and their world.
What Fernwayer looks for
Experience Makers are chosen for a combination of things:
Real expertise — genuine mastery, whether traditional, academic, artistic, culinary, or lived.
Long-term roots — a connection to a place built over years, or generations.
Rare access — to places, moments, communities, and rituals not available on the mass market.
Cultural grounding — the ability to interpret a place through its traditions, history, and community.
Storytelling and welcome — the ability to bring a place to life, and to receive a traveler as a guest.
The result is what these people produce: a day with a fourth-generation fisherman on the Venice lagoon; a historic Kanazawa shrine entered outside visiting hours with a 26th-generation Shinto priest; a master of UNESCO-recognized Karagöz shadow puppetry in Istanbul; a day of the El Rocío pilgrimage in Andalusia.
Who you'll meet on the day
In most cases, the Experience Maker who designed the Experience is also your host — the person who leads your day.
Sometimes, an Experience Maker works with a small team, and a trusted colleague hosts in their place — someone who knows the Experience well and leads it to the same standard.
Either way, the person with you on the day is chosen with the same care, and the Experience is delivered as it's described.
