Safety and Insurance

FOR EXPERIENCE MAKERS: What Fernwayer expects of you around safety, insurance, and Traveler wellbeing on the day.

Safety is a priority at Fernwayer. A Traveler in your care has trusted you with their day. Delivering that day well means keeping them safe — and being prepared for the moments when your judgment protects them.

Compliance with local regulations

As an Experience Maker, you must comply with all local health and safety regulations, including activity-specific requirements. This means:

  • Cooking Experiences — food safety, hygiene, and food-handling regulations

  • Transport-based Experiences — licensing and insurance for any vehicle carrying paying passengers

  • Boat or water Experiences — vessel licensing, safety equipment, passenger limits, and any required certifications

  • Guiding in protected sites — permits, park regulations, and any required certifications

  • Physical activities — hiking, climbing, cycling, or similar — any required training, first aid, or activity certifications

Rules vary meaningfully by country, region, and even city. Confirm what applies where you operate before offering an Experience.

Insurance

Public Liability Insurance (PLI) is strongly recommended for all Experience Makers and is required for any Experience involving transportation of Travelers.

For Experiences that require transport, use a fully licensed driver and vehicle — either yourself, if you're licensed and insured to carry passengers, or engage a licensed driver whose compensation is built into the Experience price.

Fernwayer does not arrange insurance on your behalf. Your PLI, your driver's insurance, and any activity-specific coverage are your responsibility.

What safety looks like on the day

Beyond compliance, safety is a lived practice through the day itself:

  • Know the routes and terrain well. For anything involving walking, hiking, driving, or boating — know what you're taking Travelers into, and know your own limits within it.

  • Watch the weather. For any weather-sensitive Experience (boat, hike, photography in extreme conditions), monitor forecasts leading up to the day and adjust, reschedule, or cancel if conditions turn. Consult with Fernwayer Support or your Fernwayer contact in these circumstances.

  • Pace to the Traveler. Adjust intensity for age, fitness, mobility, and how the Traveler is holding up on the day. What's easy for you may not be for them.

  • Carry basics. A first-aid kit for physical Experiences, a phone with local emergency numbers saved.

  • Know when to stop. If conditions become unsafe — weather, terrain, a Traveler feeling unwell — pause, reroute, or end the Experience. Safety is more important than any listed itinerary.

Traveler wellbeing

Travelers may not always know their own limits, especially in unfamiliar environments (heat, altitude, uneven terrain, water). Your job as host includes:

  • Stating fitness requirements clearly in the Experience description — difficulty of a hike, distance covered, and similar

  • Asking about relevant health, mobility, or fitness considerations through Chat, one week before the Experience

  • Adjusting the day to keep them comfortable and safe, within the framework of what was booked — noticing fatigue, dehydration, altitude signs, or discomfort
