Summary

Search and add the tax rates for the areas you service. If you are tax exempt for the services you provide, you do not have to create a tax rate.

Key Points

  • Search for tax rate by zip code

  • Give the tax rate a name

  • Make this the default tax rate for all new customers, if you want

  • Add zip codes that have the same tax rate

  • Search and copy the zip code tax rate

  • If the service you provide is taxable, select Service Taxable.

Go to Settings/Tax Rates and click the New Tax Rate button in the upper-right corner.

Search for tax rate by zip code

Enter a zip code for a service area.

Tax rate name

Enter a tax name, for example the city or region. If you don’t enter a name, one will be entered for you when you click the Discover button.

[ ] Make this the default tax rate for all new customers?

Select this option if you want to use this tax rate as the default for all new customer accounts. You can change this in the customer’s Location page at any time.

Zip code list

Add zip codes that should auto-select this tax rate when creating new customers. To simplify your tax reports, you can group together zip codes that have the same tax rate into one tax rate name.

Click the Search button and the tax rates for the zip code appear on the right side of the screen and it shows the properties for the zip code entered.

Copy

Click the Copy button to transfer the discovered tax rate information into the new tax rate for Fieldwork.

Note Some areas have two tax rates for the same zip code. In these instances:

  1. Create a New Tax Rate

  2. Change the name of the Tax name to reflect the area this tax rate applies to

  3. Edit the tax rate for this area

  4. Click the green Create Tax Rate button

  5. Create another New Tax Rate

  6. Follow steps 2 through 4 above

[ ] Service Taxable

By default, materials are taxed. If the service you provide is taxable, select Service Taxable.
