How to match indentation and formatting in your exported manuscript
How to match indentation and formatting in your exported manuscript

πŸ“„ Get great print-ready formatting in Google Docs in a few easy steps.

Updated over 2 years ago

Once you've exported your manuscript to Google Drive, you might want to adjust the formatting in your Google Doc so that it matches how your manuscript looks in First Draft Pro.

We send as much of the formatting as possible through to the Google Doc version, but there are some limitations to what Google will allow us to do. So, here's a helpful guide to help you easily adjust the formatting in your exported Google Doc πŸ˜€

2. Highlight the first two paragraphs of the text in your Google Doc (be careful not to highlight all the text, or any headings):

3. Under the "Line & paragraph spacing" tool, select the option for 1.15 line spacing:

4. Under the Format menu select "Align and indent" and then "Indentation options":

5. Set the "Special Indent" to "First Line" and either 0.5 or 1 (depending on how deep an indentation you'd like).

6. Finally right click on the first paragraph and select "Format options". Then select "Update 'Normal text' to match".

This will update all the paragraph text in your document to match the line spacing and indentation format you've set up (so you don't have to update the formatting chapter by chapter).

We're constantly working on ways to improve the formatting in the exported Google Doc version of your manuscript, so we'll keep you updated as we're able to do more. Please feel free to send feedback πŸ™‚
