Flippd can automatically detect when you're driving and log the trip for you. Turn on auto-tracking from the Mileage tab and Flippd records your trips in the background.
The Mileage Tracking Strip
At the top of the Mileage tab is a tracking card that always shows what Flippd is doing. It has three looks:
Off -- a prompt to "Auto-track your drives" that "Logs sourcing trips automatically." Tap it to turn tracking on.
Auto-tracking on -- a green card reading "We'll log your drives in the background," with a pulsing green dot to show it's active. Tap Manage to change the mode, pause, or turn it off.
Manual tracking -- "Start and stop trips yourself." The dot pulses only while a trip is recording.
While a drive is being recorded you'll see "Recording your drive…"
How It Works
Open the Mileage tab
Turn on tracking from the strip and choose auto-detection
Grant location permissions when prompted
Go about your day -- Flippd detects when you start driving and records:
Start and end locations
Distance traveled
Trip date and time
After the trip, review it in your mileage log
Classify it (Sourcing, Shipping, Supplies, Banking, or Personal)
Tracking Modes
Flippd offers different tracking modes to balance accuracy with battery life:
Auto-Detect -- Flippd automatically senses when you start driving and begins recording
Manual Start -- You start and stop tracking yourself via the Start Trip / Stop Trip button
Off -- No automatic tracking; use manual trip entry only
You can switch modes anytime by tapping Manage on the tracking strip.
Reviewing Auto-Detected Trips
Auto-detected trips appear in your mileage log for review. For each trip:
Verify the distance is correct
Classify it (Sourcing, Shipping, Supplies, Banking, or Personal)
Save, or dismiss it if it wasn't a business trip
If Tracking Needs Attention
If something is stopping Flippd from recording, the strip tells you and shows a Fix button:
"Location services are off -- trips can't be recorded"
"Location permission denied -- auto-tracking is paused"
"Allow 'Always' location access so trips record in the background"
Tap Fix to jump straight to the setting you need to change.
Good to Know
Auto-tracking uses your device's location services and requires location permissions
For background detection on iOS, Flippd needs "Always" location access
Battery impact is minimal -- Flippd uses efficient background location
You can still add trips manually even with auto-tracking enabled
Classify a route the same way a few times and Flippd offers to auto-classify it going forward
Review and classify auto-detected trips regularly so they're ready at tax time
