Criteria to Bill for MNT

Updated over a year ago

What Telehealth activities are considered MNT for RD billing?

Synchronous, face-to-face or audio-to-audio MNT

  • Only synchronous, face-to-face (or audio-to-audio) MNT is billable as MNT. A minimum of 2 people (provider + member) must be present for the time to be billable

What Telehealth activities are NOT considered MNT for RD billing?

  • Time spent reviewing records without the member present

  • Waiting for the member to answer their phone call or get onto zoom

  • Troubleshooting technology issues of food issues with our member care coordinators

  • Time spent prepping for member visits, including meal planning or research, without the member present

  • Documenting the encounter without the member present cannot be considered into the equation

A good rule of thumb to decide whether something is billable as MNT is to ask yourself if BOTH of the following are true:

  • Are two people (RD + member) present?

  • Are we speaking about a topic that impacts the member’s nutrition, health, goals, obstacles, or progress?

If you answer “yes" to both: it’s very likely billable as MNT

If you answer “no” to either question: it is NOT billable as MNT

**it is NEVER appropriate to report time spent beyond face-to-face time with the patient as billed MNT.
