Note: This guide will walk you through publishing Looker dashboards on digital signage using the Fugo TV Dashboards feature. You can also use the Looker app which uses Looker's dedicated API.

Take "big picture" data to the big screen

Stories are lurking within your data silos. Stories that can drive successful outcomes for your business across your teams - Sales, Marketing, Customer Support, Accounts, Logistics, Finance, Product… the data is all there.

Looker’s data visualizations allow you to pull out those stories via collated dashboards which you can now display in conference rooms, warehouses, storerooms, sales offices, or wherever you need quick and central access to your data - which becomes expensive and difficult to distribute with a login tool.

Looker & Fugo TV Dashboards

Fugo’s new TV Dashboards feature allows for smart, easy, and - most importantly - secure integration with your Looker dashboards. It allows for you to make full use of your Looker dashboards and display them on workplace screens without having to risk your privacy by creating a publicly accessible URL, or by storing your login credentials on an insecure player that can be taken out of the office or remotely accessed, revealing your details.

Fugo handles all of your encryption and access on a private and secure Cloud server, which means you can rest easy in the knowledge that your data is safe and sound, and won’t be intercepted by people sniffing around your network. This makes Fugo one of the most secure digital signage platforms available for integration with third-party dashboards.

Let's dive in!

1. Best Practices for Using Looker with Fugo

Before we start the walkthrough for connecting your Looker account and displaying your dashboards on your digital signage screens, let’s go over a few best practices for connecting a third-party service with Fugo CMS:

1. Create a service account:

We've worked hard to develop the TV dashboards feature so that your sensitive data is completely secure. But as an extra precaution, we highly recommend using a 'least privileged' service account when setting up your dashboards - this is usually an account that has read-only permissions for the dashboards you want to display on your screen(s.) You can read more about how to set up a service account with Google here.

2. Start with your dashboard URL

It's often the case that you can navigate directly to your target dashboard's URL when creating a new dashboard in Fugo. This will require you to log in, and then you’ll be redirected back to your destination. This is the quickest and most reliable journey you can make in Fugo Dashboards as it cuts out unnecessary steps in your journey.

3. Search for your dashboard

Most dashboard services have search capabilities. Instead of clicking through multiple menus, you can get to your target content quicker and more reliably by searching for it. We recommend searching the full name of the content you want to display, as partial search terms may return more items you'll have to sift through.

2. How to share a Looker dashboard to your digital signage screens

Connect your screens to Fugo

2.1 Log into your Fugo Account. If you don’t have an account yet, you can start your 14-day free trial here.

Note: TV Dashboards are a part of Fugo's Business Plan. During your free trial, you can create one dashboard. To create any more, you will need to upgrade your plan.

2.2 Make sure your screen(s) are connected to Fugo CMS. If you haven’t connected your screen(s) yet, you will find a dedicated setup guide for your preferred platform in our Help Center's Hardware Collection.

Create a dashboard

💡 Note: If you will be using Okta SSO to sign in to your account, you can find instructions for using Okta with Fugo's TV Dashboards feature here.

2.3 Click Dashboards in the top navigation bar to go to your Dashboard library. If you have not created any dashboards yet, this page will be empty.

2.4 Click Create Dashboard to get started.

2.5 This will take you to the New Dashboard recorder page where you will follow the instructions to capture and preview your dashboard before publishing it to screen.

2.6 First, you’ll need to enter the URL you use to log in to Looker into the URL field and click Go.

💡 Note: In the side panel to the right you will see instructions, as well as the steps that are being recorded inside your dashboard service account.

2.7 If this is your first time creating a TV dashboard, a popup guiding you on how to configure your Chrome browser to allow the Fugo recorder to run in incognito mode will appear. You can find our instructions for allowing incognito mode here. If this is not your first time, you can skip this step.

2.8 The Fugo recorder will open a new incognito window using the Looker URL you entered earlier. This window will contain the Looker login screen; enter your Looker username and password to sign in as normal.

💡 Note: We recommend you to set up a least-privileged user for your account. If you have Single Sign On (SSO) set up with your account, the recorder will work automatically without any additional configuration. However, if you use 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) then you will need to input your 2FA key in the recorder. You can find those instructions here.

2.9 Now that you’re signed into your Looker account, you will need to navigate to the dashboard that you want to display on your screens. You’ll notice that your clicks and actions are recorded in the right-hand side pane. This pane builds a step-by-step walkthrough for the Fugo recorder of how to log in and access your dashboards, and you can edit or remove steps along the way if you make any mistakes.

💡 Tip: When you’re looking for your dashboard inside Looker, we recommend using the search bar instead of sifting through all of your available dashboards. This allows the Fugo recorder to find the correct dashboard much faster and prevents the recorder from getting lost if the location or order of your dashboard changes.

2.10 Once you’ve reached your destination and navigated to the dashboard you’d like to display, click Capture Dashboard, and this will capture the entire screen and display it on your digital signage.

If you want to publish only one portion of your dashboard, you can click on the Camera icon and hover over the portion you’d like to capture.

2.11 The recorder will now close. At this stage, you will see a “loading” area in Fugo CMS — this may be present for several seconds to a few minutes while the Fugo recorder securely sends the instructions from the right-hand pane to the secure Cloud server, and fetches the first screenshot for display. Once it appears, ensure that it looks the way you’d expect.

2.12 If you are happy with the preview, you can either click Save to publish your dashboard later, or you can click Publish to push it to screen immediately.

You can publish it directly by choosing a screen, screen group, channel, or playlist to publish to.
