How do exams work? What are follow-up tests? What are corrections?

Updated this week

Exams, even cumulative exams, are quick to create in GMM. Individualized corrections and follow-ups, along with an exam analysis, are created automatically for the teacher.

During an exam, students will not earn points or game credits. Students do not have immediate feedback while working on exams; they will not see smiley faces or magenta dots.

Teachers can enable Corrections so that students will correct mistakes made on an exam.

Teachers can quickly save the grade for an exam to automatically create a follow-up for each student.

Teachers may print practice tests and exact tests including answer keys.

In this article, you'll learn how to:

Create Exams

There are two ways to create an exam.

1.) Create an exam from Spiral Review.

2.) Create an exam from a collection, My Work, or My Colleagues.

To create an exam from Spiral Review:

Choose CLASSES.
Choose a class from the left column.
Choose Spiral Review from the middle column.
Click the check box to the left of the skills you wish to add to the exam.
Click ACTIONS.
Choose Create Exam.

Name the exam.
Choose Each student gets different problems or Each student gets the same problems.
Edit the number of each problem from each Skill if you want more than one of each skill.
Click SAVE.

The exam is ready to publish (make available for students to request).

To create an exam from a collection:

Choose WORK from the top blue ribbon.
Click the blue + sign.
Choose Create Exam.
Name the exam.
Choose skills from a collection, from My Colleagues, or from My Work on the right.
Choose Each student gets different problems or Each student gets the same problems.
Edit the number of problems from each skill if needed.
Click SAVE.

The exam is ready to publish (make available for the students to request).

Publish Exams

Choosing PUBLISH on an exam allows your students to request and begin the exam.

Click PUBLISH to distribute the exam.

Choose Shuffle to scramble the order of the skills on the exam.
Choose the class(es) to receive the exam.
Click PUBLISH.

(This enables the option for a student to request the exam.)

Choose CLASSES from the blue ribbon.
Choose a class from the left column.
Choose Exams from the middle column.
The Enabled slider will be on. This means that your students may request to take the exam.

Monitor Exams

Auto Accept allows ALL students in the class to take the exam immediately after clicking on Exams & Follow-ups.

Teachers may choose to allow Auto Accept for the default of 15 minutes, or teachers may allow Auto Accept for a longer period of time by clicking on the blue time oval.

To request a test, a student will click on their menu option in the upper right corner and choose Exams & Follow-ups.

The student will choose the exam by name.

If you have Auto Accept turned on, the student will start the test. If Auto Accept is not turned on, teachers need to grant permission for the student to take the test.

When a student works on the exam, they will not see smiley faces. The gray box with the blue checkmark indicates that the student has entered an answer. Students do not have immediate feedback during exams.

When a student completes the test, they will click on Hand in exam.

Students will return to an assignment or Spiral Review after clicking Hand in exam.

While students are working on an exam, use Exams to monitor progress.

Status

Not started: The student has not started the exam.

In Progress: The student is working on the exam.

Paused: The student has viewed some, or all, problems on the exam and closed the GMM tab or the teacher has paused the exam.

Grade Exams

By clicking SAVE GRADE for a student or GRADE TURNED IN EXAMS for a class, teachers:

  1. update the Analysis for the exam

  2. create the Follow-up for the exam

  3. create Corrections for the exam

To grade an individual exam:

Choose CLASSES from the blue ribbon.

Choose a class from the left column.

Choose Exams from the middle column.

Click on an exam name.

Click on a student's name.

Correct answers are given credit and show green on the teacher's screen.

Incorrect answers are marked by a red X.

Teachers may offer full, partial, or no credit for incorrect answers by clicking on the options at the bottom of the screen or by clicking F for full credit, P for partial credit, or N for no credit.

When a teacher has graded the exam, the teacher clicks SAVE GRADE.

A teacher may choose to save the grades for a class by clicking the GRADE TURNED IN EXAMS button.

Teachers may print a student's exam and answers by clicking the print icon.

View Analysis

To view the Analysis for an exam--

Choose CLASSES from the blue ribbon.
Choose a class from the left column.
Choose Exams from the middle column.
Click on an exam.

Click VIEW ANALYSIS in the upper right.

The analysis is updated after the teacher has clicked SAVE GRADE for students.

Teachers can create an assignment from Analysis as well.
Click the check on the left of the description and then click CREATE ASSIGNMENT.

After clicking CREATE ASSIGNMENT, the skills selected will show in WORK. Follow the steps to create an assignment.

Enable Corrections

Just as students must correct mistakes in assignments and Spiral Review, students correct errors on exams after the teacher has saved grades and enabled Corrections.

Corrections for an exam show on a student's screen above the dotted line.

From the student's view, Corrections are completed by correcting the mistakes and practicing for the Follow-up by solving the $ problems above the dotted line.

Note: Students may not access Need help? while working on Corrections.

After the student corrects the mistakes from the exam and earns a point on a similar problem, the student will have $ problems above and below the dotted line.

Remember, the $ sign prioritizes practice for each student.

Enable a Follow-up Exam

When your students are ready to take the individualized Follow-up Exam, move the slider to enable, or show, the Follow-up exam.

Students request a Follow-up Exam from their student menus or the teacher may enable Auto Accept.

Teachers monitor progress and grade Follow-up Exams in the same manner as regular exams.

Choose CLASSES from the blue ribbon.
Choose a class from the left column.
Choose Exams from the middle column.
Choose the exam to print.
