Written Consent

What to know about written consent for Charitable Fundraising Platforms

About Written Consent

California’s Assembly Bill 488 (AB 488) regulates online charitable fundraising platforms and their fundraising activities. Its written-consent regulations took effect on January 1, 2025.

As a commercial coventurer (CCV), obtaining written consent helps establish clear permission to feature a nonprofit in your campaign and agree on how its name and branding may be used.

For campaigns covered by AB 488, charitable fundraising platforms and platform charities generally must obtain a charity’s written consent before using its name to solicit donations, unless a specific exception applies.

The law covers online fundraising activities such as:

  • Round-up donations

  • Charitable crowdfunding

  • Charitable sales promotions, coventuring, and cause marketing campaigns

The consent requirements that apply to your campaign depend on how the program operates.

What Nonprofits See

When nonprofits create an account, they will automatically be opted in to provide consent in order to participate in some programs on Change. They may opt out anytime by unchecking a listed program in the dashboard.
