Tier 1: Organizational Affiliation
Tier 1 verifies that the user is affiliated with the nonprofit. We attempt the following methods in order, moving to the next method only when the previous one is unavailable:
Email domain match: We compare the domain of the user’s email address with the nonprofit’s website domain.
Email control verification: We send a verification email to an email address published on the nonprofit’s website.
Document review: We review an uploaded document, such as a bank statement, voided check, IRS determination letter, or Form 990.
Note: You do not need to complete all three methods. Each additional method is used only when the preceding method is unavailable.
Tier 2: Stripe Identity Verification
Some nonprofits may require additional verification based on factors such as their payout history, reported revenue, or overall risk profile. Tier 2 includes Tier 1 requirements plus mandatory identity verification through Stripe Identity.
Note: Verification through Stripe Identity is required for Tier 2. There are no alternative methods available in place of this step.
Tier 3: Authorized Representative Verification
Nonprofits meeting certain internal review criteria may require enhanced verification. Tier 3 includes Tier 1 and Tier 2 requirements, plus confirmation that the user is an authorized organizational representative, such as an individual listed on Form 990 or identified in a principal role on the nonprofit’s website.
Note: If the current user does not meet either requirement, an eligible representative must register for an account on Change and complete the verification process separately.
