Dependant Cover in Trail

How to include dependants in your insurance advice: Nature & Scope settings, adding a dependant to the advice, and where dependant cover appears through the opportunity and SOA.

Written by Jacob Watters

Use this article to include dependants in your Insurance Advice Process: setting up dependant cover in your Nature & Scope, adding a dependant to the advice, and seeing where dependant cover appears through the opportunity and Statement of Advice (SOA).

How do I control dependant cover in my Nature & Scope settings?

Giving advice for dependants may or may not be part of your scope, and you control this in your Insurance Settings. You'll need admin rights to change these settings.

1. Go to Settings, open your Insurance Settings, and go to Nature & Scope of Advice.

The Nature and Scope of Advice section in Trail's Insurance Settings.

2. Select the Dependant tab.

The Dependant tab in Trail's Nature and Scope settings showing three checkbox columns per cover type.

The checkboxes here are all selected by default. Each column controls one thing, and deselecting any of them applies to new opportunities only:

  • First column: whether this dependant cover type is included in your Nature & Scope. Deselected, your clients have no way to include dependants as part of the advice.

  • Second column: whether you can exclude this cover type from the scope within the opportunity. Deselected, you cannot remove this type of dependant cover from new opportunities.

  • Third column: whether your client can deselect this during a fact find. Deselected, your client cannot opt out, so new opportunities must include this type of dependant cover.

How do I include a dependant in the advice?

1. On the People page of an insurance fact find, select the dependant to add under the Dependants section.

2. In the dependant's details, turn on the toggle to include them in the advice. The toggle is enabled by default when clients add their dependants through the fact find.

Once the toggle is on, the sections below become visible and editable within the Insurance Advice Opportunity.

Where does dependant cover appear through the opportunity?

Medical questionnaire

If you include dependants within your advice, you will see the medical details section appear for them. You can then click into the tabs for each of the dependants and fill out the information.

Please note medical information for dependants is all optional, so you can put in as much or as little as you need to (these details are also all optional fields in the fact find too).

Needs analysis

Dependants can receive advice for Trauma or Health cover only. These are the only areas with a Dependant tab next to the Adult tab at the top of the page; switch between the two and select the areas of cover your client needs for their dependants.

Recommended cover

Once you generate the recommended cover table, a Dependant tab appears next to the Adult tab. Editing cover for dependants works the same as for adults, using Refine Cover (adviser side) or Enter Portal (for client variations): see Recommending Insurance Cover Amounts.

Two things are different for dependants: Trail has no default calculations for dependant cover, so enter the specific amounts (or a lump sum in the Emergency Fund section); and if you choose "input my own recommendations", the dependants' names still appear in the relevant SOA tables.

Statement of Advice

With SOA Templating, you can switch dependant cover sections on or off using the toggles in the editable parts of the template (such as Recommended Cover Summary or Breakdown). In the SOA Editor, dependant cover appears alongside the adults' information, in its own tables reflecting the needs analysis and recommended cover you've filled out.

Winning the opportunity

Win the Insurance Advice Opportunity as you usually would (see Winning an Insurance Advice Opportunity); any dependant cover in the finalised policy details becomes part of the new policy product on the client's profile.
