Spreadsheet Overview

Familiar spreadsheets, connected to the live Giraffe model

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

A number in a pro forma is only as good as the last time someone updated it. Today, that update is manual: someone reads a figure off Giraffe, types it into Excel, and it goes stale the moment anyone moves a building. Spreadsheet is an Excel-style grid that sits next to your live Giraffe model, so an area schedule, a unit mix or a residual land value calculation recalculates the moment the project changes.

Spreadsheet is in open beta.

What Spreadsheet does

Spreadsheet has real cells, real A1-style formulas and real charts. Two things separate it from opening Excel next to Giraffe:

  • Stamped schedules. Pick a source, a group-by and some measures, and Spreadsheet writes ordinary formulas at the selected cell. The cells recalculate every time the project bakes, and you can edit, copy or delete them like any other cell.

  • GI.* functions. Type a formula like =GI.TOTAL("grossArea", "usage=Residential") in any cell to link it straight to the project. Move a building or change a usage anywhere in the project, and watch the number update on its own. Combine it with ordinary spreadsheet functions like SUM, IF, VLOOKUP, NPV and IRR.

Quick start

  1. Click Insert schedule in the toolbar.

  2. Choose a source: Baked sections for the engine's calculated output (areas, unit counts, usage rates already applied), Raw sections for the geometries as originally drawn, before the engine stacked and applied usages to them, or Usages for the project's usage table itself. Then choose a row grouping like Usage, and one or more measures.

  3. Click Insert at the shown cell reference. Spreadsheet writes the schedule as ordinary formulas, starting at your selected cell.

  4. Type a formula directly into any other cell, starting with =GI., to pull a single number instead. Autocomplete lists the fields your project actually has.

  5. Click Chart with a range selected to turn any schedule into a chart.

Stamped cells are not bound. After Spreadsheet writes them, they are ordinary formulas. Editing, copying or deleting one works exactly like editing, copying or deleting any other cell.

Everyday spreadsheet work on top

Once the live numbers are on the sheet, Spreadsheet works like any other spreadsheet: SUM, IF, VLOOKUP, NPV, IRR, multiple sheets, charts, and colours and borders from the right-click menu. Copy and paste round-trips with Excel and Google Sheets, and you can import an existing .xlsx workbook.
