Dimensions Tool

Measuring and dimensioning

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Setbacks, easements, and lot dimensions all need to be checked and communicated precisely, not eyeballed. Click the Measures button in the drawing toolbar and choose one of the following.

Find the area of a polygon you've drawn

Check a lot, footprint, or setback zone against your site area without measuring it again. Click the polygon on the map to select it. The Summary app shows its Area and Perimeter in your project's units.

Select more than one polygon to see their combined area in the Summary app. Perimeter shows when you select a single polygon.

To see the area written on the polygon itself, select it and press V for Vertex Edit. The area label appears inside the shape.

Dimensions that show when you select a geometry

Giraffe labels the size of a geometry you've drawn as soon as you select it, so you can check frontages and lot sizes at a glance. Which labels show depends on how you're editing.

When you click a geometry, the width and height of its selection box appear along the box's sides. These show the overall size of the selection. They don't show the length of each edge.

In Vertex Edit (press V or click Vertex Edit in the drawing toolbar), every edge of the geometry gets its own length label. Each polygon also shows its area inside the shape.

  • Lengths show to one decimal place, in m or ft.

  • Areas show to four significant figures, in m² or ft².

  • A polygon with holes shows its area with the holes taken out. Holes get edge lengths too.

  • A multipolygon shows an area label for each part.

  • A line shows the length of each segment and has no area label.

  • Points have no dimension labels.

While you draw, Giraffe labels each edge as you place points, and shows the area once the shape has three or more points.

Turn on Classic draw mode in Preferences to see edge lengths and area as soon as you click a geometry. Classic draw mode also shows the geometry's points straight away and hides the Vertex Edit tool.

Temporary measurements

Tape measure and Tape measure (area) are spot-checks. They disappear once you click away.

  1. Select Tape measure (or press Shift + L) or select Tape measure (area).

  2. Click to place the first point, then click for each additional point.

  3. Close the shape by clicking near your first point, or press Space or Enter.

Permanent dimensions

Dimension (linear) and Dimension (area) stay on the canvas after you finish.

Dimension (linear) (or press Shift + D): click to place the first point, click for each additional point, then close it by clicking near your first point or pressing Space or Enter.

Update the style of a dimension using Appearance and label properties.

Dimension (area): click to place the first point, click again to set the width, then click a third time to finish.
