A pro forma that bolds its totals, shades its inputs, and formats money as money is easier to check and easier to hand to a lender. Every formatting option in Spreadsheet lives in one place: the Style menu.
Open the Style menu
Select the cells, rows, or columns you want to format.
Right-click the selection.
Choose Style.
Click the back arrow next to Style to return to the main right-click menu.
Bold and italic
Choose Bold (Cmd/Ctrl+B) or Italic. Choose it again to turn it off.
Long text: overrun, clip, and wrap
Text spills into the empty cells beside it by default, the same as in Excel, and stops at the first neighbouring cell that already has something in it. Choose Long text to change that:
Overrun: spills into the empty cells beside it. This is the default.
Clip: cuts the text off at the cell's own edge.
Wrap: wraps the text onto more lines and grows the row to fit.
Align text
Click one of the three buttons next to Align to line text up to the left, centre, or right of the cell.
Colour text and cells
Text colour: changes the colour of the text.
Fill colour: changes the background colour of the cell.
Pick a swatch, or click the last swatch to choose any custom colour. To remove a colour, choose Default under Text colour, or None under Fill colour.
To change a usage's colour on the map, see The Usages Sheet in Spreadsheet.
Borders
Choose Borders. First pick a line weight, Hairline, Medium, or Thick, and a colour. Then pick where the line goes:
Box: outlines the whole selection.
Inside: draws the gridlines between the selected cells, leaving the outside untouched.
All: draws every edge of every cell.
Top, Bottom, Left, or Right: draws one edge of the selection.
None: removes every border.
An edge means the edge of the selection, the same as in Excel: choosing Top on a three-row range draws one line above the whole range, not a line above every row. Each click adds only the edges you choose and leaves the rest alone, so clicking Top and then Left builds a corner.
Number format
Choose Number format to show a number as currency, a percentage, a date, and more. The format only changes how the number looks, not the value behind it.
See Column Types in Spreadsheet for every number format and how each one displays.
Clear formatting
Choose Clear formatting (Cmd/Ctrl+\) to remove bold, italic, colours, borders, alignment, and number formats from the selection. The values and formulas stay.
Formatting on the Usages, Blocks, and Features sheets only lasts until you reload, because those sheets are rebuilt from the project each time.
See Rows & Columns in Spreadsheet for inserting, deleting, and resizing.
