Offset, Align & Extend

Offset a shape, align edges and geometries, or extend a line to a target

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Setbacks shift, lots get realigned, and roads need to reach the boundary. Use the Modify tool's offset, align, and extend options to adjust what's already drawn, without redrawing it. Click the Modify tool in the drawing toolbar to choose one.

Offset

Offset grows or shrinks a shape, or moves a line parallel to itself. Use it to test a setback or a building envelope.

  1. Click the Modify tool and choose Offset, or press Shift+O.

  2. Click a shape or line.

  3. Move your mouse to preview the offset. Inside a shape shrinks it. Outside grows it. For a line, the side your mouse is on sets the direction.

  4. Click, or press Enter, to finish.

Type a number to set an exact distance. Your mouse still sets the side.

Offset changes the original geometry. It doesn't make a copy.

Align edge

Align edge lines up one edge with another, like squaring a building to a property line.

  1. Click the Modify tool and choose Align edge.

  2. Click the edge you want to move. Shift-click to add more edges. Shift-click an edge again to remove it.

  3. Click the edge to align to. OR click empty space to move the edge there, parallel to where it started.

  • Type a number to move the edge by that distance.

  • When you're moving several edges, press Tab to choose which edge the typed distance applies to.

The edges need to face roughly the same way. Giraffe won't align edges that are perpendicular to each other.

Align feature

Align feature slides a whole geometry flush against an edge, like setting a building against a boundary.

  1. Click the Modify tool and choose Align feature.

  2. Click the edge you want to align to.

  3. Hover over the geometry you want to move. A preview shows it flush against the edge.

  4. Click, or press Enter, to finish.

Move your mouse toward the near side, center, or far side of the geometry to choose which side lines up. Press Tab to cycle through them.

  5. Type a number to leave a gap between the geometry and the edge.

  6. Shift-click to finish and keep the same edge, so you can align more geometries to it.

Extend line

Extend line runs a line out until it meets another shape or line, like a road that needs to reach the site boundary.

  1. Click the Modify tool and choose Extend line.

  2. Click the shape or line you want to extend to.

  3. Hover near the end of the line you want to extend. A preview shows it running out to the target.

  4. Click, or press Enter, to finish.

  • Shift-click to finish and keep the same target, so you can extend more lines to it.

  • If the line doesn't meet the target, Giraffe extends the target's edge to find where they cross.

Extend line only lengthens single lines. It can't shorten a line or extend a shape.

To grow or shrink selected geometries by a typed distance, use Offset by Amount in the Command Bar.
