Control Points & Midpoints

Move, add, and delete a shape's points

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

A parcel line or a building footprint is only as accurate as its corners. Move, add, and delete a shape's individual points to get it exactly right, instead of redrawing it.

To show a shape's points, double-click the shape, or right-click it and choose Edit Shape. You can also open Vertex Edit mode from the drawing toolbar or the Command Bar.

Control points

The dots at each corner of a shape are called control points.

Move a point

Click and drag a control point to move it.

Move several points at once

  • Shift- or Cmd/Ctrl-click a point to add it to your selection. Click it again to remove it.

  • Click and drag over empty space to box-select every point inside the box on your selected shapes. Hold Cmd/Ctrl while you box-select to remove points instead.

  • Drag any selected point, and every selected point moves with it, even across more than one shape.

Dragging a point that isn't in your selection clears the selection and moves only that point.

Add a point

Hover over an edge to see a dot at its midpoint. Click the dot to add a control point there.

OR hold Option/Alt and click anywhere along an edge to add a point at that exact spot. The preview snaps to the midpoint when you're close to it.

Turn midpoint dots on or off with Hover to insert midpoints, in the Drawing section of Edit > Preferences…. It's on by default.

Delete a point

  • Select one or more points, then press Delete/Backspace.

  • Hold Option/Alt and click a point.

  • Double-click a point.

🚨 Warning: Double-clicking a point deletes it right away.

A polygon always keeps at least 3 corners, and a line always keeps at least 2 points. Giraffe won't delete a point past that.
