Use editable terrain to visualize grading changes and site works.

Toggle on Terrain in the Terrain app.

Select "Editable Terrain"

Draping Geometries

The default option for editable terrain is for Giraffe geometries to drape along the terrain. Draping works as follows:

  • Landscape, roads, and other 2D elements follow the terrain contour (like fabric)

  • Buildings and 3D geometries align to the approximate average base height of the terrain it sits over.

Building Pad

If the site has a significant slope, Buildings that are draped may appear to be floating.

This is where Building Pads come in handy!

The building pad usage is a special designation that carries all of the cut & fill properties.

Draw a building pad under any geometries you want to flatten the grade to.

To draw a building pad:

  1. Click Landscape tool (in the top bar)

  2. Select "building pad"

  3. Draw a polygon.

The editable terrain mesh is adjusted based on the pad location.

Edit the settings for the Pad in the properties palette.

Terrain Properties

Set the terrain property values in the properties palette to control the building pad datum and cut & fill behavior.

Elevation Datum:
Adjust the real-world elevation (above sea-level) of the pad

Cut & Fill:
Toggle on/off cut & fill behavior

Angle of repose:
Adjust the slope of the terrain away from the building pad

Cut & Fill Offset:
Adjust the distance (in meters) from the edge of the pad before the cut starts to slope away

Design Options & Terrain

If you have multiple scenarios in your project, you can set various terrain conditions.

Include the building pad geometries in the layer/layer group for each option. The terrain mesh will adjust based on which building pads are currently visible.
