Set up aiChat once and it can search parcels, read your project, and draw buildings on the map for you. Setup takes three choices: your region, an AI key, and a model.
Open aiChat settings
Click the gear icon in the top right of the aiChat app to open its settings. Click Back in the same spot to return to the chat. Settings save as you change them.
Choose a region
The region decides which parcel data aiChat can search and which units it answers in. Pick US, AUS, or International at the top of settings. US is the default.
US: aiChat answers in feet and acres and searches US parcels through Regrid. The Australian parcel skill is off.
AUS: aiChat searches the Australian national parcel database. Regrid is off. Units follow your project's unit setting.
International: neither parcel skill loads. Units follow your project's unit setting.
Add an AI key
aiChat runs on your own AI account, so it needs an API key from Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), or Fireworks. First, create a key in your Claude, Gemini, or Fireworks account. Then add it to aiChat in one of two ways.
Your workspace administrator can share an AI credential with the app. Pick that credential from the dropdown on the Anthropic API Key, Gemini API Key, or Fireworks API Key card. The card then reads Using Giraffe credential. Only workspace admins can see the key's value. This is the more secure option.
OR
Choose — manual entry — from the dropdown and paste your key into the field. A key you paste is saved in your own browser only. Teammates on the same project need to add their own key.
aiChat picks a shared credential on its own when the credential's name contains the provider, like "Claude" or "Gemini." If a credential was shared after you opened aiChat, click the ↻ button on the card to load it.
Each card shows its status. Set means a key is in place. Required means the model you chose needs this key. Optional means the current model doesn't use it.
Usage is billed by your AI provider at your plan's rates. aiChat shows an estimate as you chat.
Pick a model
Choose the model aiChat uses from the Model dropdown in settings, or from the model picker in the aiChat header. The model must match a provider you added a key for. If it doesn't, the model picker turns amber and the message box reads Set API key in settings first.
aiChat lists these Claude models, with Sonnet 4.6 as the default:
Sonnet 4.6
Sonnet 4.5
Haiku 4.5
Haiku 4
When you add a Gemini key, aiChat loads the current list of Gemini chat models straight from Google.
Add a model that isn't listed
Add any model by its API id. Type the id in the box under the Model dropdown, then click Add or press Enter. An id that starts with gemini uses your Gemini key. An id that starts with accounts/fireworks/ uses your Fireworks key. Any other id uses your Anthropic key. Click the ✕ next to a model you added to remove it.
Add a Regrid token for US parcels
aiChat searches US parcels through Regrid, using your own Regrid token. Add it on the Regrid Token card, either from a shared credential or by pasting it. Without a token, US parcel searches stop with "No Regrid token configured." Australian parcel search needs no token.
Set when the conversation compacts
Long chats get slower and cost more, so aiChat summarizes older messages once a chat grows past a limit. Set that limit in Compact conversation at. The default is 40,000 tokens. aiChat keeps your last few messages in full and replaces the rest with a summary. A Conversation compacted divider shows where that happened.
Turn skills on or off
Skills tell aiChat how to handle each part of Giraffe, like layers, buildings, or analytics. Switch them on or off under Core Skills in settings, and add your own under User Skills. Turning a skill off also removes the tools that go with it, which saves tokens.
