Charity Navigator is the world’s largest independent nonprofit evaluator and its Giving Basket donation form acts like an online shopping cart, but for donations. It helps people donate to multiple nonprofits with just one payment.

Although Giving Basket donations are different from Give Lively donations, Give Lively powers the Giving Basket. Our 501(c)(3) organization, the Give Lively Foundation (EIN 81-0693451) is in charge of disbursing those donations. This enables all Give Lively approved nonprofits to receive direct deposit monthly transfers of their Giving Basket donations processed through Stripe.

Nonprofits that are not approved members on the Give Lively platform can also receive Giving Basket donations. Those donations are sent by check via mail. Notably, PayPal and Venmo donations made through the Giving Basket are disbursed by check, too. Even for Give Lively approved nonprofits.

You can always reach out to Charity Navigator to learn more about the tool if you have questions, and request to be removed from receiving Giving Basket donations, if you so choose. You can contact them through their page at Contact Charity Navigator, or send them an email to info@charitynavigator.org.

Giving Basket Donation Details

All Giving Basket donations are made through Charity Navigator's website. Charities are found through their search engine. Donors choose how much they want to donate to each nonprofit they add to their cart before going to checkout. Once at checkout the donor makes one payment based on how much they have allotted to donate to each charity. This allows donors to donate to multiple charities while only having to pay once.

When someone makes a donation through Giving Basket the following will occur immediately after the donation has been fully processed:

  • The donor will receive an email receipt with their chosen nonprofit’s details next to any corresponding line items along with a note in the footer to show the disbursement is being handled by the Give Lively Foundation.

  • The nonprofit will see the funds in their reports portal after the donation has been transferred or mailed in a check

Giving Basket Fees

While Give Lively’s fundraising platform is free for nonprofits, the Give Lively Foundation does charge a 2.5% platform fee on Giving Basket donations. This is in addition to the usual fees charged by third-party services used to process and disburse each donation.

Any disbursements mailed by check will also have a $1.01 check processing fee automatically deducted from it. This fee is subtracted from the lump-sum amount by spreading its cost proportionally across all donations included in the check. If you export a CSV of your Giving Basket data, which you can do for all checks through the Give Lively data reports portal, a column called “Fractional Disbursement Fee” will show how the fee was split up.

Giving Basket Donation Receipts

Give Lively automatically sends email receipts to donors with all the necessary tax acknowledgements so that nonprofits do not have to do so manually. These receipts are not viewable or downloadable through the Line Items reports, however, unlike how Give Lively donation receipts are.

That said, we encourage nonprofits to reach out to their Giving Basket donors to thank them for their gifts and foster a relationship with them and their giving just like any other donor.

Giving Basket Donation Refunds & Troubleshooting

For all questions about Giving Basket donations, including refunds, cancellations and changes, contact Giving Basket support through their Contact page at Contact Charity Navigator, or send an email to info@charitynavigator.org.

Please note that refunds, if possible, can only be issued during the same calendar month of the completed transaction.

Giving Basket Transfers & Checks

Give Lively utilizes a Stripe transfer to send nonprofits the funds they've received through Giving Basket. The transfer will always be in batches of donations, not individual ones. Give Lively sends an email notification each time a Stripe transfer is initiated.

Stripe transfers are initiated within 30 days after the month the donations it encompasses has ended. For example, a nonprofit that received Giving Basket donations in January will see the transfer in their Stripe account before the end of February.

To identify and understand incoming Giving Basket donations when they appear in the Stripe balance:

  • Log in to the Stripe account connected to your Give Lively nonprofit account

  • Navigate to the "Payments" tab.

  • In the “Description” field, lump-sum transfers of donations received through the Giving Basket are described as "Give Lively / Giving Basket."

    • Payments with a description of “Give Lively / Smart Donations” are for donations made through regular Give Lively fundraising pages.

  • To further confirm that these are Giving Basket transfers from Give Lively, click on any "Give Lively / Giving Basket" payment and look under "Payment method" for the "Account" and "Transfer" alphanumeric identifiers. If the "Account" ID is acct_171IIzE7e1hvLgXj, then you are indeed looking at Giving Basket donations transferred to you by Give Lively.

As mentioned earlier, Giving Basket donations are also sent by check. Checks are mailed to non-approved Give Lively nonprofits who have received Giving Basket donations. Checks are also sent for any Giving Basket donations made through PayPal and Venmo, as these funds cannot be transferred through Stripe. So even approved Give Lively nonprofits may receive checks just of these donations.

Checks are mailed once a month, within 30 days after the month the check encompasses has closed. For example, a nonprofit that received Giving Basket donations in March will be mailed the check with those donations before the end of April. With mailing time being a factor, however, this could result in the check arriving after April has started.

Just like with direct transfers, the check will be a lump sum for the net value of donations directed to your organization via the Giving Basket. These checks are mailed along with a letter of instructions and a claim code to use to create an account to log in with. The letter explains that:

  • There are no conditions attached to these funds.

  • A donation acknowledgment/tax receipt was sent to each donor by Give Lively at the time of the donation.

  • A free Reports Portal, also powered by Give Lively, contains comprehensive data about these donations with instructions on how to log into the portal.

Nonprofits will receive a claim code with every check until it is used to set up an account for viewing reports. It will be the same claim code for six months from the time the first check is sent. After every six-month period, that code will expire and a new code will be issued.

Nonprofits will stop receiving codes once you have registered. Once used, the claim code is never needed again. If you are unable to log in and access Giving Basket donor data then you can contact Give Lively support (removing this link, replace with new instructions).

Giving Basket Line Items Reports

Details about any donations received through Giving Basket are available to nonprofits through the Give Lively reports portal. Non-approved Give Lively nonprofits will load the reports portal as soon as they log in.

Important: These details become available only after the check is mailed or the Stripe transfer is initiated. Stripe does provide limited data once the Stripe Transfer has been initiated, but this is separate from the Give Lively Reports portal and only accessible through your Stripe account.

Approved Give Lively nonprofit admins can access the reports portal after logging in by clicking on "Data Reports" in the navigation bar and then "Line Items (All)". This will open a dropdown including links to three types of on-screen reports:

  • Line items (Giving Basket) - the same as the Line Items (All) view, but only of Giving Basket donations.

  • Transfers - a summary of all the contributions disbursed via direct deposit which includes transfer IDs, amounts and dates, and transfer status. Clicking on a line item will load an Expanded View of every donation that composes the lump sum transfer.

  • Checks - a summary of contributions disbursed via check, including check number, amount and date sent, mailing address, and mailing status. Clicking on a line item will load an Expanded View of every donation that composes the check.

These reports work the same as the standard Line Items (All) report does for approved Give Lively nonprofits.
