Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that lets charities claim an extra 25p for every £1 you donate at absolutely no extra cost to you. If a charity on givestar is signed up for Gift Aid, you'll see it displayed on their campaign page.

Where does Gift Aid appear on givestar?

When a charity is registered for Gift Aid, it will be shown on their campaign page. This lets you know before you donate that your contribution is eligible — meaning the charity can claim the extra 25% from HMRC on top of what you give.

How does it work?

When you donate to a Gift Aid-eligible campaign on givestar, the charity is able to claim an additional 25% from HMRC based on your donation.

Am I eligible as a donor?

Gift Aid is claimed by the charity — not by you directly. However, for a charity to be entitled to claim it, the donation must come from a UK taxpayer. This means:

  • You must be a UK taxpayer

  • You must have paid enough Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax this year to cover the Gift Aid amount

  • The donation must be from your own money — not collected on behalf of others
