Improving your Process Throughput Time

Processes can make work flow faster. This is measured as Through Put Time. Larn how to measure and improve it case by case.

Learn how to...

  • see the Process Throughput Time (PTT) for every case in a process.

  • set target cycle time for every activity in a process.

  • measure your PTT against your target.

  • analyse how to improve your process and increase PTT.

A short, simple intro to process improvement

First you may wan to revisit the basics of process improvement in the following video. Watch the full video (9:40) or specific sections:

How to find the process throughput time for a case

Want to see how a process is performing? Then go to the process page to see the elapsed time for each case (show here as read, where target time is gray):

If you click the case, then you will see a detail view where...

  1. shows to elapsed cycle time per activity versus

  2. the target cycle time for the activity

  3. adds up the cycle times for all activities to show the PTT

TIP!: You can visualize throughput time by using the 'Calendar' view of a case. This shows you have much time passed from the task was activated till it was closed (green), as well as how long uncompleted tasks have been open (orange):

Starting to improve your process and increase PTT

Once you have completed a number of cases using the same case template then you will start to see a pattern:

  • Run case reports to view when tasks were completed and where the biggest delays were.

  • Identify bottlenecks and slow hand-overs between roles.

  • Review the activity's work instructions and tasks to see if you can improve the speed at each handover, or reduce the cycle times within specific activities.

How is PPT calculated?

Process Throughput Time is calculated as the duration from when each activity's tasks were started until when the last task was completed in the activity. This is the activity's cycle time. The cycle time of all activities are then added up to produce the total cycle time, or the PTT.
