Updating Your Objectives in Elate

Here is a video on how to update your objectives in Elate!

The Importance of Updating Objectives

Updating objectives creates transparency around your strategic plan and allows it to evolve with you. You're able to collaborate across departments and celebrate wins. If you and your team are not consistently updating your objectives, you are deprioritizing the importance of your strategic plan. If you’re not checking in on your most important initiatives, it will lead to time being spent on less important projects.

When your team understands what information is up to date or out of date, they will perform better. Up to date information will help your team make better decisions, allowing for easier cross functional collaboration.

Knowing what objectives are behind or at risk will help surface any potential blockers. This information can help determine if action is needed to remove blockers, if there are new constraints that need to be considered, or if more discussion is needed around a particular initiative.

Finally, knowing what is on pace will help your team celebrate wins together, and will create excitement around when goals have been hit. Keep reading to learn how quick and easy it is to provide updates in Elate!

Updating Objectives in Elate

On your home page, there are two places where you can update your objectives.

  • To Do List

    • This blue banner on the right-hand side of your Home page will show objectives you own that are due for an update.

  • "My Objectives"

    • This section shows all objectives you own.

The easiest way to provide the 3 step update is by using the My Objectives list to tab through your objectives due for an update. Start by clicking into the objective you wish to update.

The first step is updating the objective status. To do this, click on the status chip by the objective title to select the appropriate status. You are also able to update the status by using the Select Status dropdown from the blue banner and providing any relevant commentary.

The statuses for objectives in Elate are defined as follows:

  • On Pace

    • You anticipate you will achieve this goal by the end of the objective's duration.

  • At Risk

    • Something has come up that makes you believe you may not achieve this goal by the end of the objective's duration.

  • Behind

    • You do not believe you will achieve this goal by the end of the objective's duration.

Once you've updated the status, you're ready to move on to step 2 which is updating any manual key results! Key results are outcomes and tactics. If you are utilizing any integrations for outcomes, you will not need to update those since they are being automatically pulled in.

If you are manually updating the outcome(s), select the Update button in the bottom left corner of the outcome. You will then be able to enter the current numbers for this outcome. To learn more about outcomes, check out our article here!

Tactics will always be manually updated and are measured on a progress bar of 0-100% complete. To update a tactic, simply click on the current value and enter the updated percent complete. To learn more about tactics, check out our article here!

The final step of the update process is adding any relevant commentary! The comments will help your team stay aligned, and it will allow you to provide more detail on how things are going.

At the bottom of the objective details page, you will see an Activity section. Here you are able to type in any relevant commentary or context for your team and @ mention a user if needed. Please note you are able to make a comment from the blue banner shown above as well.

You have now completed the update process!
