Barcode Scanning for Retail

Scan a barcode instead of searching for the item: faster checkout and less guessing.

Written by Huong Pham

Why We Built This

Finding the right item shouldn't take long. Until now, adding a retail item to an invoice meant searching by name or category and entering a quantity for each one. When a shelf is full of look-alike products, like a blue leash next to a yellow one, that's slow, and it's easy to pick the wrong one.

Barcode scanning fixes that. Add a UPC to your retail items, and your front desk can scan an item's barcode to put it on the invoice, then move on to payment the way they always have.

What It Means for You

  • Faster checkout. Scan instead of search. Items reach the invoice as fast as your team can scan them.

  • Fewer mistakes. The barcode picks the exact item, so the invoice matches what the customer is buying, even across look-alike products.

  • More time back as you grow. The bigger your catalog and the busier your front desk, the more this saves.

  • Nothing new to learn at checkout. Retail sales start the same way, and searching by name or category still works.

How It Works

Scanning builds on the retail flow your team already uses.

1. Add a UPC to your retail items. Open a retail item in Offer Builder, click into the UPC field, and scan the item's barcode to fill it in. Each UPC can belong to only one item.

2. Start a retail sale. Same as today: start a new booking, select retail, and select the customer.

3. Scan items. On the booking page, scan an item's barcode. It's added to the invoice with a quantity of 1. Buying more than one? Scan it again or raise the quantity in the cart.

4. Check the cart. The cart underneath the categories selector lists each item with its quantity and shows the subtotal. Add or remove quantity there.

5. Continue to payment. Click continue. Payments work exactly as they do today.

A Few Things to Know

  • UPCs are added item by item. Scanning each item's barcode into its UPC field is the quickest way to do it. Bulk UPC import is not part of this release.

  • Existing retail items don't have a UPC until you add one. Items without a UPC can still be added by searching by name or category.

  • UPCs apply to retail items only. Other offer types don't have a UPC field.

  • Each UPC belongs to one item. Goose won't save the same UPC on two items.

  • There can only be one UPC for each retail offer.

  • A scan adds one item and nothing else. It doesn't start payment or finish the sale.

  • If a scanned code isn't recognized, a message appears letting you know, and nothing is added to the invoice.

  • Goose works with any barcode scanner. Keep your scanner set to its factory settings.

  • Scanned items are recorded on the invoice the same way as items added by hand.

Setup required before you scan

Add a UPC to each retail item you want to scan by scanning its barcode into the UPC field. Items without one can still be sold with search. Questions? Reach out to the Goose support team and we'll help.
