Working on Gophr can be a very different experience than other delivery apps. Particularly if you are working in and around central London.

New to couriering or Gophr this should be a handy guide on how to maximise your earnings on the London circuit.

Before we begin, you'll need a basic grip on the dispatcher algorithm. This is how you'll likely receive most of your work opportunities.

How the dispatcher works (In a nutshell)

The dispatcher algorithm has a single goal - Advertise the job to the best courier for the job. The most optimal courier.

What is the best/most optimal:

  • The highest rated

  • The closest to the job (and thus the fastest, no, engine size doesn’t matter)

  • The one who’ll drive the fewest deliver the job

How does knowing this work to your advantage?

Scenario

You have no jobs on. The dispatcher knows where you are, so it will send you jobs nearby, but it doesn’t know where you are going..

So…

Tip #1: Make sure you have a job allocated.

Once you have a job on, the dispatcher knows:

  • Where you are

  • Where you are collecting from

  • Where you’ll pass by

  • Where you will end up

This means you'll be considered as a better option for more jobs across this bigger area. And you should begin to receive more work.

You want to keep busy. If you become ‘empty’ (Without an active job) the dispatcher will stutter.

The aim is to get on a ‘run’ (a chain of jobs) and try to get as many jobs at any point that you can deliver on time.

Tip #2: Log on early

Get online early. Well before you plan to leave.. This way you might get sent your first job down long before you start work. The dispatcher will now see you’re covering a lot more ground.

This is even more helpful if you live close to central London. Sometimes you can get a job that takes you where you want to go; where there is the greatest chance of getting more work.. And paid on the way!

If you log in when you want to start, you might have to wait some time for the first order to come in! Losing valuable time.

Tip #2.5: Grab yourself a scheduled job

Having a scheduled job on your app can have the same effect. The dispatcher knows you’re going to be working, and where you’ll be. So it’ll know to consider you for work in the area at the time.

Bonus tip: The next day job board will be accessible to you earlier the higher your KPI rating is.

Even if the job is not perfect, getting a job on your app might still be worth it.

Now, how to make the most of it?

Now, how to make the most of it?

Tip #3: Go into the congestion zone

Yep. surprise, that's where most of the action is.

Will it pay off to go into the congestion? If you’re going to give it a try then you should:

  • Do it first thing in the morning (Even better if you can get a job going that way before you start - see tips 2 + 2.5). That way you can make sure you get the most out of your investment

  • Set up auto payment on the .gov website. This way you won’t forget (and get a penalty). Its also a little bit cheaper!

Tip #3.5 Work the whole day - Especially when its busy

So you’ve made the investment and gone into the congestion zone. You’ve got a run going, what next?

Seems obvious, but - make the most of it.

You’re out, you’ve paid up, you’re on a roll. Keep it going, Make the money while it's in reach.

Another Bonus tip: The later in the work day it gets the more urgent the deliveries become. Generally, the higher the urgency, the better it pays.

You can also keep an eye out for the ‘evening jobs’ on the job board. This will help ensure your run stays intact all the way through.

Though if you get a job that takes you home, well that's a bonus!

Maximise your efficiency.

Tip #4: Be selective of the jobs you take

When the dispatcher algorithm sends you a job, it means at that time you are now the most optimal courier. (More on this in a moment..)

That doesn’t mean this job is the best for you.

When selecting the jobs you should take, effort vs cost is the most important factor. Try to take jobs that are very close to the route you’re already on. Worry about the actual value only after this.

Though sometimes a high paying job is a high paying job, so grab those bangers too!

You’re likely to earn more while moving and making incremental gains than you are whilst sitting empty and waiting for a tasty job.

Tip #5 Stay on time; Make sure you leave time within your route to slot more jobs in

The dispatcher will not want to make jobs late. I'll prefer to find an alternative courier if sending you the job will make your existing jobs late.

There may be times, usually at peak, or with bad weather where you'll receive jobs which are already late.

If the dispatcher sends you a job, this means you’re now the best option. Even if you’d be late. you may want to consider taking it.

To prevent this from impacting your future job allocations, reach out to the team. They may be able to update the deadlines.
