This module is designed to collect all the information related to your buildings, so we can include those in the calculation of your Scope 2 emissions (GHG emissions associated with energy consumption).
In this article, you will learn:
If this module is relevant to your company;
Where to fill in your building information;
What information to fill in and how calculations are done;
Areas of focus.
Important: All the details you provide for each building must accurately represent the reporting period (the timeframe covered by the accounting file) you have submitted.
1. Why Consider Emissions from This Module?
If your company operates from a physical space other than employees' personal residencesāsuch as offices, warehouses, factories, or co-working spacesāthis module is essential for calculating your energy consumption emissions.
Key Considerations:
Proportional Input: If your company occupies only part of a building, report only your portion of the space and its corresponding energy use. For example, if a building is 20,000 sqft and your company occupies 10%, you should enter 2,000 sqft and 10% of the total energy consumption.
Remote Workers: Employees working remotely are accounted for in the Employee Survey module, so their home offices should not be included here.
Operational control
Operational control
According to the GHG Protocol, "a company has operational control over an operation if the former or one of its subsidiaries has the full authority to introduce and implement its operating policies at the operation."
"It should be emphasized that having operational control does not mean that a company necessarily has authority to make all decisions concerning an operation. Operational control does mean that a company has the authority to introduce and implement its operating policies."
2. How to Upload Your Data
To complete this module, go to Data > Buildings and click āAdd buildingsā or click on the corresponding task on your dashboard.
You have two options to upload your data:
Manually (Single Building Form) ā For individual entries.
Using the template by clicking on "Import file". The template is downloaded in the same language as the platform. When using it, we ask you to fill the English one with English data and the French one with French data. You can always download the other language on the READ ME page of the template.
Required information :
For each building, input the following details:
Building name;
Country and city type ;
Number of employees at the location;
Occupied space (if only part of the building is used).
Key Data Section
Building & Parking Construction Impact
Building & Parking Construction Impact
Only relevant under BEGES methodology (not GHG Protocol).
Greenly calculates the embedded carbon footprint of construction based on building type and surface area.
Parking structures are included using a factor of 2.4 kgCO2e/mĀ²/year.
Electricity Usage
Electricity Usage
Input electricity consumption (kWh) for the reporting period.
If no data is available, Greenly estimates consumption based on building area and heating energy source.
Emission factors vary by region:
France: ADEME
USA: eGRID
Other countries: IEA or ElectricityMaps
If using the GHG Protocol methodology, report renewable electricity purchases to adjust market-based emissions. For more details, check these articles:
Heating Data
Heating Data
Select heating type (gas, oil, or heating network).
Specify the heating network (if applicable).
Enter consumption data (kWh) or allow Greenly to estimate based on surface area.
Air Conditioning
Air Conditioning
Report air conditioning use and specify:
Surface area affected
Refrigerant type (e.g., R404a)
Annual refrigerant gas leakage (if available; otherwise, Greenly estimates using 2.37 kgCO2e/mĀ²/year).
Keep in mind that the more information you give, the more precise will be the emissions calculations.
If you don't have the data to complete this module, you can always click on "Skip task" on the left of the page.
3. Review your data and read your results
Once you have uploaded your data, you can flag the expenses related to the module to avoid double counting and access your results. To do so, please read the related article.
