To compute the total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of your company, a four-stage process is followed.

  • Accounting files assessment

First, your accounting data is imported on Greenly's platform.

Then, by analysing each transaction, categorising it using our algorithm, and multiplying the amount by the corresponding monetary emission factor, the carbon footprint (kgCO2e) associated with this expense is estimated.

The total GHG emissions is computed by summing emissions for all transactions.

Example: with a monetary emission factor of 0.5 kgCO2e/$, a $10 expense results in the emissions of 5 kgCO2e.

  • Estimation of emissions linked to non-monetary data

Some emissions cannot be estimated using monetary data. Therefore, additional information must be provided in the Company Information and Building tabs of the Data section of Greenly's platform.

For example, the number of employees or the office space are asked for.

Example : the quantity of office waste generated by the company is estimated using the total number of employees.

  • Employee Questionnaire

The answers provided by your employees are used to understand their transport habits, their food choices, their digital habits, etc.

This information is used to estimate the GHG emissions of certain emission categories.

Example: emissions resulting from commuting are estimated using the mode of transport and the distance travelled each day by employees.

  • Activity-based data and specific modules

The goal of computing GHG emissions using a monetary approach is to identify the most significant emission sources. These emissions then need to be fined-tuned by carrying out studies using physical flows and data.

In this case, physical data (L/gallon, km/miles, kg/lbs, etc.) are multiplied by activity-based emission factors.
