Within the GHG protocol framework, the emissions linked to Upstream Transportation & Distribution are calculated from emission factors in CO2e per liter of fuel consumed of transport provider's vehicles.

If information on fuel is not available, it is possible to use an emission factors in CO2e which involves the mass transported, the distance and the mode of each shipment.

The last possibility is to use an emission factor in CO2e per amount of money spent for each mode of transport.

Companies may optionally calculate emissions from unladen backhaul (i.e., the return journey of the empty vehicle)
