Australia RBA Updates

Written by Jesse McNeil

Important Information regarding RBA updates

From 1 October 2026, major Australian card networks will introduce new rules that prevent businesses from applying an additional surcharge specifically because a customer chooses to pay by card.

We want to clarify what these changes mean for Groovio studios.

There is no change to the Groovio Platform Fee.

The Groovio Platform Fee is a 1% per-transaction fee that applies to eligible payments processed through the Groovio platform. (Your studio's rate is shown under Account → Tax & Fees.)

The Platform Fee is applied consistently to eligible Groovio-processed payments. The same fee applies whether a customer pays by card or bank account, and it does not change based on the type of card or card provider used. It is a platform fee, not a card surcharge.

Payments processed outside Groovio and recorded manually, such as cash, external bank transfers or payments taken through a studio's own external payment terminal, do not attract the Groovio Platform Fee.

What about Stripe processing fees? Stripe's processing fee is not added to the customer's price. It is deducted from the payout your studio receives, as it is today.

What happens on 1 October?

No automatic changes will be made to your current Platform Fee settings.

Studios can continue with their existing configuration and have the Platform Fee paid by the customer.

Alternatively, studios can choose to absorb the Platform Fee themselves. This may suit studios that prefer to incorporate the cost into their own pricing or present customers with a single studio-set price.

You can manage this setting at:

Account → Studio Profile → Studio Settings → Payment & Tax → Platform fee paid by studio

Clear pricing for customers

Where a Platform Fee applies, Groovio will continue to clearly show the applicable Platform Fee and total payable to the customer before payment is completed.

We are also reviewing pricing displays across Groovio to ensure applicable fees and total prices are presented clearly throughout the customer purchase journey.

Studios remain responsible for the prices they set and for their own advertising and pricing representations. Groovio will continue to manage the presentation of the Groovio Platform Fee within Groovio-controlled payment and checkout experiences.

No action is required if you are happy with your current Platform Fee configuration.
