How to Set a Habit-Stacking Reminders

Stacking your habit to schedule your day more effectively with habit stacking

Habit Stacking is a proven behavioral psychology technique that involves pairing a new habit with an existing one. In Habitify, this feature allows you to automate your productivity system by linking behaviors together to build seamless habit chains and personalized workflows.

Instead of relying on a specific time of day to remember your habits, you use an action you already do as the trigger (or cue) for the next task you want to accomplish.

How it works

The habit stacking feature acts as an automated trigger within your daily routine. It tells the app to notify you about your next task the exact moment you log your current one.

The Habit Stacking Formula:

Remind me of [Targeted Habit] when [Base Habit] is marked as [Completed / Skipped / Failed]

By setting up these rules, you connect multiple habits into a continuous sequence. As soon as you finish one task, it immediately prompts the next, creating a natural domino effect.

For example:

  • The Morning Workflow: Remind me of [Read 10 Pages] when [Make Coffee] is marked as [Completed].

  • The Evening Routine: Remind me of [Take a Walk] when [Have Dinner] is marked as [Completed].

  • The Flexible Backup Plan: Remind me of [Run 5 km] when [Swim 1 hour] is marked as [Skipped].

Why it is Effective

  • Reduces decision fatigue: You never have to wonder what to do next; your sequence is already planned.

  • Capitalizes on momentum: Completing your "Base Habit" gives you the psychological push needed to start the "Targeted Habit."

  • Creates lasting routines: The more you repeat this automated workflow without breaking the pattern, the faster your new habits become ingrained in your daily life.

How to build a stack of habits

Before you start, ensure you have your habits already created in your habit list.

Then follow these steps:

  1. Define which habit should be reminded, then take a long press and choose Edit.

  2. In the settings screen of the habit, tap on Reminder.

  3. In the section Habit Stacking, tap on + Add

  4. In Remind me to [your habit] when section, choose:

    1. The habit you interact before the current habit

    2. The status of the previous habit which will trigger the reminder

  5. In the Send me Notification section, choose

    1. Immediately: send the notification right away

    2. After + [number of time]: set the waiting time before sending the reminder

  6. Tap on Done to save the reminders, and go back to the Reminders view

  7. Tap Done again to go back to the settings screen of the habit

  8. Tap Save to go back to homeview

By leveraging habit stacking, you can effortlessly integrate new habits into your existing routine, making adopting and maintaining positive behaviors easier.
