Habit Stacking is a powerful method that involves pairing your new habit with an existing one.
How it works
The formula for habit stacking is simple:
After/ before [CURRENT HABIT], I will do [NEW HABIT].
For example:
5 minutes after I drink coffee, I will meditate for one minute.
After I remove my work shoes, I will immediately take a bath.
By linking new habits with existing ones, you establish clear cues that prompt you to perform the new behavior. This way, you don't have to rely solely on the time of day to remember your habits.
The more you repeat the habit stacking without breaking the pattern, the faster the new habit becomes ingrained in your routine.
How to build a stack of habits
Before you start, ensure you have your habits already created in your habit list.
Then follow these steps:
Define which habit should be reminded, then take a long press and choose Edit.
In the settings screen of the habit, tap on Reminder.
In the section Habit Stacking, tap on + Add
In Remind me to [your habit] when section, choose:
The habit you interact before the current habit
The status of the previous habit which will trigger the reminder
In the Send me Notification section, choose
Immediately: send the notification right away
After + [number of time]: set the waiting time before sending the reminder
Tap on Done to save the reminders, and go back to the Reminders view
Tap Done again to go back to the settings screen of the habit
Tap Save to go back to homeview
By leveraging habit stacking, you can effortlessly integrate new habits into your existing routine, making adopting and maintaining positive behaviors easier.
