A Note from Hampden
We’re honored that you own a vintage Hampden timepiece — it’s a meaningful part of our history.
While we don’t have historical factory records or an in-house appraiser, we’re happy to share resources collectors and enthusiasts commonly use to identify and research their watches.
🔎 1. Identify Your Watch (How to Open Your Pocket Watch Safely)
To learn more about your pocket watch, start with the movement serial number — not the number on the case.
The movement number tells you the most about the watch’s production era and specifications.
Visit the Pocket Watch Database:
Enter the serial number engraved on the movement (the internal mechanism). It will be a series of numbers, not letters, and not the decorative case engraving. This database offers one of the most complete Hampden archives available online.
If you’re unsure how to open your pocket watch, here are some helpful guidelines:
First, determine your case type
Most vintage Hampden pocket watches use one of two case styles:
Hinged Back (most common):
The back cover opens like a small door. You may see a tiny lip or notch where a fingernail or case knife can be inserted.
Screw-Back Case:
The entire back unscrews, similar to a jar lid. These usually have shallow grooves around the edge.
If your watch has a hinged back:
Look for a small notch along the outer edge of the back cover.
Use a fingernail or thin case knife to gently lift the back open.
In many cases, there may be two covers:
The first protects the movement.
The second (called a dust cover) opens to reveal the movement and serial number.
If your watch has a screw-back:
Hold the front of the watch firmly in your palm.
Rotate the back counterclockwise.
If it’s very tight or doesn’t move, do not force it — forcing can damage antique threads.
Always avoid prying with force.
Vintage cases can dent, scratch, or bend easily. If you’re unsure, a jeweler or repair professional can open it in just a few seconds.
💬 2. Connect with Collectors
Many collectors and hobbyists share identification tips, repair advice, and historical insights online.
We recommend joining the Hampden Pocket Watch Collectors Group on Facebook:
Please read the group rules before posting — most prohibit selling or scrapping discussions.
You can also find discussions and guides on Reddit’s watch forums.
🧭 3. Find a Repair or Appraisal Resource
Hampden no longer services or appraises vintage pocket watches, but there are several trusted options:
National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC): nawcc.org — their business directory lists qualified watchmakers and appraisers.
Local jeweler or watch repair shop: A bench jeweler can help verify gold content or read case markings.

Keep in mind that most vintage Hampden watches hold greater sentimental value than monetary value, especially if passed down through family.
