Troubleshooting Your Microphone on Your Desktop

Tips to troubleshoot your microphone on computer

If you are having issues with your microphone on your computer, please follow these steps:

1) Check Your Browser Microphone Permission

  • All browsers

    • Go to the Health Note website

    • If a pop-up window appears asking for microphone permission, click Allow

    • If a pop-up does NOT appear, then, if available, click on the settings symbol in browser's URL bar. Turn on microphone permission.

    • If a pop-up does NOT appear, then follow the directions below based on your specific browser.

Chrome

  • Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone

  • Make sure Default behavior is Sites can ask to use your microphone

  • Under Customized behaviors, make sure Health Note has access to your microphone and is not blocked

Firefox

  • Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone

  • Click Settings to the right of Microphone

  • Make sure Health Note has access to your microphone and is not blocked

Microsoft Edge

  • Settings > Cookies and Site Permissions > Microphone

  • Make sure to toggle on Ask before accessing

  • Make sure Health Note has access to your microphone and is not blocked

Safari

  • Settings > Websites > Microphone

  • Make sure Health Note has access to your microphone and is not blocked

2) Check Your Computer Sound Settings

macOS

  • Go to the Apple icon > System Settings > Sound > Input

  • Verify or select your microphone

  • Make sure input volume is in middle or higher

  • Speak and notice if the input level soundbar gets darker. If the soundbar shows activity, then the microphone is working

Windows 11

  • Go to Start icon > Settings > Sound > Input

  • Verify or select your microphone

    1. If you have bluetooth microphone, select Add device

  • Click on > symbol to the right of your microphone

  • Make sure for Allow is set up for Audio

  • Speak and notice if the input volume bar is moving. If the bar is moving, the microphone is working

  • If the bar is not moving, click Start test

Windows 10

  • Go to Start icon > Settings > System > Sound > Input

  • Verify or select your microphone

  • Under Test your microphone, you’ll see a blue bar

  • Speak and notice if the blue bar is moving. If the blue bar is moving, the microphone is working

  • If the bar is not moving, click Troubleshoot to fix your microphone

3) Check Your Computer’s Browser Microphone Permissions

macOS

  • Go to the Apple icon > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone

  • Allow your intended browser to access your microphone

Windows 11

  • Go to Start icon > Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone

  • Allow your intended browser to access your microphone

Windows 10

  • Go to Start icon > Settings > Privacy > Microphone

  • Make sure the following sections are toggled on:

    1. Allow access to the microphone on this device > click Change button

    2. Allow apps to access your microphone

    3. Allow desktop apps to access your microphone

  • Allow your intended browser to access your microphone

4) External Microphone Device (if applicable)

  • Make sure your external microphone is turned on

  • Check that the external device is charged, has batteries, or is plugged in correctly
