How to Turn On Developer Mode (Android)

How to enable Developer Mode and USB debugging on your Android phone before running a collection with the Hearsay Extractor, including Auto Blocker instructions for Samsung devices.

This article explains how to turn on Developer Mode on your Android phone before beginning the collection process. Instructions may vary slightly depending on your device model or Android version. This also includes steps to turn off Auto Blocker if it is enabled.


Enable Developer Mode in your phone's settings to prepare your device for the collection.

Step 1: Open your phone's Settings app

Open your phone's Settings app and scroll down. Tap About phone.

Step 2: Tap Software information

Tap Software information. On some devices, this step may not appear — skip ahead to Step 3 if you see Build number directly on the About phone screen.

Step 3: Tap Build number 7 times

Tap Build number 7 times. You may be asked to enter your device PIN or password.

Step 4: Confirm Developer Mode is on

You will see a message confirming that Developer Mode has been turned on.

Step 5: Go back to Settings

Tap the back arrow to return to the main Settings screen. On Samsung devices, go to SettingsDeveloper options. On other devices, go to SettingsSystem.

Step 6: Open the Developer options menu

Tap Developer options to open the menu.

Step 7: Toggle USB debugging on

Scroll down to the Debugging section. Toggle USB debugging on.

Remember: Turn off Developer Mode after your backup is complete.


Turn Off Auto Blocker (Samsung only)

If Auto Blocker is enabled, turn it off to allow Developer Mode and USB debugging. This setting is only available on Samsung devices running Android 14 or later.

Step 1: Open the Settings app

Open the Settings app and tap Security and privacy. Then tap Auto Blocker.

Step 2: Toggle Auto Blocker off

At the top of the screen, toggle Auto Blocker off.

Remember: If you turned off AutoBlocker before the collection, make sure to turn it back on after you're done. Click here for instructions.
