Adding a countdown timer to your bundle

Add urgency with a fixed duration, a daily reset at midnight, or a countdown to a specific date.

Written by Eddie Lavandera

A countdown timer sits above or below your bundle offers and counts down. It exists to create urgency. By the end of this you will have one configured with the timer behaviour that matches what you are actually offering, which matters more than it sounds: the three timer types make very different promises to the customer.

In this article:

Step 1: Enable and position

  1. Open your bundle and go to the Countdown timer tab.

  2. Turn on Enable countdown timer.

  3. Set Position to Top or Bottom, relative to the bundle offers.

  4. Set Bar height.

Top is the usual choice. A timer below the offers is often below the fold and does nothing.

Step 2: Choose the timer type

Three options, each behaving differently.

Extra fields

Fixed duration

Counts down from a set number of minutes for each visitor

The countdown resets after it ends

Duration (minutes)

Ends at midnight (user's local time)

Counts down to midnight in the customer's own time zone

The countdown resets every day at midnight

None

Custom end date

Counts down to one specific moment

Countdown to a specific date and time

End date, End time

Fixed duration restarts for each visitor and resets when it ends. It creates session urgency rather than a real deadline.

Ends at midnight is a genuine daily deadline in the customer's own time zone, which makes it truthful if your offer really does change daily.

Custom end date counts to a real moment. Use it for a real sale with a real end.

Step 3: Write the title

Set the Title, using the placeholder as a model: Hurry! Offer expires in {{timer}}.

Add the text {{timer}} where you want the countdown to appear. Without it, the countdown has nowhere to render.

Step 4: Style it

Colours are under Countdown timer colors: Background color and Text color, plus Use gradient background with Gradient start color, Gradient end color and Gradient direction.

💡 High contrast, small footprint. A timer works by being noticed, not by being large. A slim bar in a contrasting colour outperforms a big block that pushes your offers down the page.

Choosing honestly

⚠️ A Fixed duration timer restarts for every visitor and resets when it expires. If your title says the offer expires and nothing actually changes when it does, you are making a claim that is not true. Customers notice, and consumer protection rules in several markets treat fake urgency as a prohibited practice.

Safer wording by type:

Timer type

Honest wording

Fixed duration

Your cart is reserved for {{timer}}

Ends at midnight

Today's offer ends in {{timer}}

Custom end date

Sale ends in {{timer}}

If you want real urgency, use Custom end date and genuinely end the offer, or Ends at midnight and genuinely change it daily. Both are more persuasive than a fake countdown anyway, because they hold up when a returning customer checks.

If the timer does not appear

  1. Check it is enabled and the bundle has been published since you enabled it.

  2. Check the title contains {{timer}}. Without the token, there is nowhere for the countdown to render.

  3. Check the bundle itself is showing. If the whole bundle block is missing, the timer is not the problem. See Why aren't my bundles showing on my store?

  4. For a custom end date, check the date has not passed. A timer counting to a moment in the past has nothing to count.
