Medications for erectile dysfunction (ED) work by increasing blood flow to the penis. They’re effective and well-tolerated for most patients, but some may experience mild to moderate side effects.
1. Headaches
One of the most common side effects.
Caused by the widening of blood vessels (vasodilation).
Usually short-lived and dose-related.
Tips:
Stay well-hydrated.
Avoid alcohol on the day you take the medication.
Speak to your doctor if headaches are persistent.
2. Facial Flushing
Redness or warmth in the face, neck, or chest.
Caused by increased blood flow.
Tips:
Often mild and fades within 30–60 minutes.
Usually less noticeable over time.
3. Nasal Congestion
Some men feel a blocked or runny nose.
Linked to blood vessel dilation in nasal passages.
Tips:
Drink water and avoid other medications that cause drowsiness or dehydration.
4. Indigestion or Heartburn
Some patients report stomach discomfort or reflux.
Tips:
Take the medication on a relatively empty stomach.
Avoid heavy or spicy meals around the time of use.
5. Visual Disturbances (rare)
May include slight blurring or a blue tint to vision.
Short-term and typically harmless, but report to your doctor.
6. Back or Muscle Aches
More common with longer-acting medications.
Often mild and improves within a day.
Tips:
Gentle stretching or magnesium supplementation may help.
7. Dizziness or Light-headedness
Can occur from a drop in blood pressure, especially if taken with alcohol or other vasodilators.
Tips:
Avoid combining with alcohol.
Stand up slowly from seated positions.
Important Note on Nitrates
Do not take ED medications if you are using nitrates or medications for chest pain, as this can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
Side effects from ED medication are usually mild, temporary, and improve with continued use. If symptoms become bothersome or affect your daily life, speak to your prescribing doctor for support or a potential adjustment. Always follow your dosing instructions.
