Advanced Search

Advanced Search is a powerful tool designed to go beyond what is already offered in Basic Search. Advanced Search provides users with a suite of tools designed to help fine tune the group of voters that you are trying to reach, also known as a target audience.

Criteria Cards

All advanced searches begin with criteria cards (shown with blue arrows). These are the basic building blocks used to build your search. Criteria are selected from the left menu bar and they will appear in the workspace as criteria cards:

Criteria cards are used in conjunction with Boolean operators (AND, OR, AND NOT, and OR NOT), grouping, and nesting to help you build your target universes.

Access Advanced Search

Advanced Search can be accessed in the sidebar from Search > Advanced Search.

Create an Advanced Search

You'll be brought to the Advanced Search home page to start a new search. If you would like to access an old project, click the "Saved Audiences" button to retrieve previously saved searches.

The top bar will display the counts for your Advanced Search. Counts will update automatically as criteria is added to your search.

Add your criteria by expanding the criteria menu and selecting the '+' next to the criteria card. If it's necessary to make a selection, a pop-up will appear to allow you to choose your narrowed down field.

Press 'x' and you'll see your criteria and new counts appear in the workspace.

Repeat the process to add criteria. You'll notice the option 'AND' appear. Click the drop down on 'AND' to change your boolean operator to 'OR', 'AND NOT', or 'OR NOT'

Adding three or more criterion will bring up small arrows to the left of your boxes. These allow you to group your searches and adjust your boolean operations. Hover over the arrow and a gray bar will appear:

Click the gray bar and the bar will turn blue. Other gray bars will appear to show options of where you can end your grouping. In this case, there is only one other box where the gray bar will appear.

Once a group has been created, there will be a box around the group's criteria cards.

Within this group you can change the Order from AND to OR, AND NOT, or OR NOT.

Once the group is created you can continue to add additional search criteria.

In this example, we can see the use of both groups and nested groups. All operators within a group must be the same. However, at the nested level between groups, we can change the operators to best fit the audience we are attempting to find with our search.

To make any changes to your search, you can refer to the various options to the right of your criteria.

  • x - will delete your criteria card

  • i - hovering over will give the counts for that specific card

  • l|l| - will remove your grouping

  • *Clicking the criteria card* - will let you edit your selection

Boolean Operators

Please review our guide on Boolean Operators for more information on the logic behind AND, OR, AND NOT, and OR NOT.

Saving Your Progress

When you're satisfied with your Search Criteria, refer to the bottom of the page where you can name your search.

In the bottom right corner, click 'Save' to save your title and add an optional description. Click 'New' to start a new search.

When the Save Audience As box appears, you have the option to 'Make available to others in my organization'. If you'd like this search to be visible to others that you share a database with, we recommend selecting this option.

Prepare to Export

After you've saved your work, you are now ready to export your search. For more details, check out our Saved Audiences and Export Page.
