Pairing Apple Watch to the Immersion App on iPhone

How do you connect your Apple Watch to your iPhone for Immersion?

1. Double-check the operating system on your iPhone and Apple Watch

For your iPhone: Immersion supports the iOS 13 system or newer.

For your Watch: Immersion supports the OS version 7.1 or higher. In addition, double-check that your Apple Watch is included in this list of supported smartwatches.

2. Download the Immersion app on your phone and your watch

Please download the “Immersion Mobile” app from the App store by either searching for the name or scanning the QR code below.

Note, the app should appear on both your iPhone AND Apple Watch. If you do not see the app (blue background with a white brain) on your smartwatch after downloading it to your phone, please follow these instructions.

3. From your phone, turn on all your permissions, create an account, and pair your device

Allowing Permissions

  • When you click to open the app from your phone, you will be prompted to allow Bluetooth and Notifications. Please click 'Continue' to enable these.

  • Once you sign in and begin to pair your device, you will also be asked to allow Health Permissions - you must agree to this to participate in an Immersion measurement. Note, please do not open the app on your smartwatch until prompted to do so.

Create an Account

  • From the home screen, please click on 'Sign up' if you do not yet have an account. You will not be required to verify your email - you can simply sign in after you sign up.

  • **Note, you can also choose to 'Continue as Guest'; however, most research being conducted with 3rd-party research companies requires you to create an account using the email you have on file with them.

Pair Your Apple Watch

  • Select 'Apple Watch' from the grid of devices on your phone app

  • Follow the step-by-step instructional guide in the phone app

  • When the Health Access options appear, please be sure to select 'Turn On All' when prompted to enable Health Permissions and to click 'Allow' in the upper right-hand side (Note, this is required to join an Immersion measurement)

  • Continue following the steps and open the app on your smartwatch

  • Note, if you don't see the 'Pair Apple Watch' button on your smartwatch, please check out the troubleshooting steps below

4. Congrats! You are ready to participate in an experience!

The first time you join an experience on your account, make sure to click “Start” on your Immersion app on your iPhone. If you have issues with data collection, please see the troubleshooting steps below.

Stopping Data Collection

If you are done with the Experience and ready to stop collecting data, go back to your Apple Watch and press "Stop" on your Immersion app to stop data collection.


----TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS----

Don't see the pair button / stuck on the "Welcome" screen on the app?

Note, a recent software update from Apple has led to some individuals having trouble getting the 'Pair Watch to App' button. If you are stuck on the 'Welcome" screen in the app on your smartwatch, please follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

  • Uninstall the app from your phone (this will also uninstall from your smartwatch)

  • Restart both your phone and smartwatch

  • Re-install the app to your phone

  • Open the app on the phone, but DO NOT open the app on the smartwatch until prompted to do so

  • Follow the steps in the phone app for pairing

Not able to collect data from your watch or getting an error message in the connectivity test?

  • On the Health app: Go to Account (upper right-hand corner) > Apps > Immersion > “Turn all Categories on”. For a video walk-through of turning on permissions, head to this article.

  • If you are still not seeing data, toggle off all the permissions and then toggle them back on again. Then, exit out of the Immersion app on the watch and reboot the watch (turn it off and back on)
