Understanding AdSense Ads vs. Image Ads

Learn about the differences between AdSense ads and image ads, and why you you can only display image ads in your newsletters.

Updated over 3 months ago

If you’re wondering why AdSense ads can’t be added to newsletters but Image ads can, here’s a quick explanation!

What is AdSense Ads

AdSense is Google’s automated ad network.

  • It serves dynamic ads that are chosen in real time based on the reader, the content, and bidding.

  • To work, AdSense needs special Google ad code (a script) that runs on websites.

Newsletters and AdSense don't work

AdSense can't be placed inside newsletters because most email platforms will block out any type of code, which is what AdSense is made of.

❓ Why not code

Most email platforms block out code like JavaScript, iFrames, or other scripts because these can be used for spam, tracking, or malicious activity. Allowing code to run inside an email would create major security risks for users.

What are Image Ads

  • Image ads on the other hand are static banner ads (usually a JPEG, PNG, or GIF) that you upload and insert into your content.

Newsletters and Image Ads work

Since they are just images with links, they work anywhere images can be displayed — including newsletters.

In Summary

  • AdSense ads = dynamic, automated ads that require Google’s ad code.

  • Image ads = static banners you upload and place manually.

  • Newsletters only support Image ads, since AdSense’s code won’t run inside emails.

💡 Tip: If you’d like to monetize your newsletters, Image ads are the way to go!
