How to Upgrade Your Jeep for Apple CarPlay: Compatibility, Features, and Considerations

Adding Apple CarPlay to your Jeep provides a modern and convenient infotainment experience. However, it’s essential to understand the compatibility of your vehicle, the available upgrade options, and the potential impact on existing features or services.

Compatibility and Upgrade Options

Jeep Model: 2017 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk

For the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, there are three compatible Uconnect upgrade options:

  • Uconnect 4 Variants: These provide wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You’ll need to connect your phone via USB for these features.

  • Uconnect 5 Variant: This option offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enabling a seamless experience without the need for USB cables.

Choose the Uconnect 4 upgrade if you are fine with wired connectivity, or opt for Uconnect 5 for the convenience of a wireless setup.

Features Impacted by an Apple CarPlay Upgrade

When upgrading to add Apple CarPlay in a 2018 Jeep vehicle, the following impacts on features or services should be considered:

  • SiriusXM Travel Link: This feature is only available on Uconnect 3's with navigation and Uconnect 4's with navigation. If it exists on the Uconnect 3 prior to upgrading, it will exist on the Uconnect 4. If it doesn't exist on the Uconnect 3, then the OBDGenie C-STL will need to be purchased for it to be available on the Uconnect 4. Sirius Travel Link is not a feature of Uconnect 5's.

  • Uconnect Access or Sirius Guardian: These services will be forfeited upon upgrading. Unfortunately, they cannot be retained after installing Apple CarPlay.

Summary and Recommendations

  • Determine your preferences between wired and wireless CarPlay to choose the appropriate Uconnect system (Uconnect 4 or 5).

  • If your vehicle’s existing infotainment features are crucial, confirm with a dealer about the necessary adjustments (e.g., proxy alignments) before the upgrade.

  • Be aware of feature losses like Uconnect Access or Sirius Guardian and decide if the trade-off is acceptable based on your needs.
