Double opt-in adds a confirmation step to your sign-up process. After someone submits a landing page form, they receive a confirmation message via email or WhatsApp. Their consent only becomes active once they click the confirmation link in that message. This article explains how to set up double opt-in.
Why Use Double Opt-In?
Double opt-in gives you proof that a contact actively confirmed their consent. This is a legal requirement in some countries, Germany in particular, under the UWG law, and is considered best practice for email and WhatsApp marketing in general. If a contact ever disputes receiving your messages, you can demonstrate that they clicked the confirmation link themselves.
How It Works
A contact fills in your landing page form and ticks the consent checkbox.
Innercrowd sends them a confirmation message via email or WhatsApp.
The contact clicks the confirmation link in that message.
Only at that point does their consent become active in Innercrowd.
Contacts who do not click the confirmation link remain in your database but their consent stays inactive. They will not receive your campaigns until they confirm.
Step 1: Create a Double Opt-In Email Template
A double opt-in email template must include the Double Opt-in content block. This block contains the confirmation link that the contact needs to click to activate their consent. Without it, the template cannot be used as a confirmation template.
Go to Innercrowd Dashboard > Campaigns > Templates > Email and create a new email template.
In the template editor, design your confirmation email. Keep it short and clear — the goal is to get the contact to click the confirmation link.
From the content panel on the right, drag the Double Opt-in block into your email. This block automatically contains the confirmation link.
Click Save Template. The template is now recognised as a double opt-in email template and will appear as an option in the Confirmation template dropdown when setting up a consent type.
Step 1b: Create a Double Opt-In WhatsApp Template
For WhatsApp, the confirmation link is added as a button rather than a content block.
Go to Innercrowd Dashboard > Campaigns > Templates > WhatsApp and create a new WhatsApp template.
Write your confirmation message in the Message field. Keep it concise and tell the contact what they are confirming.
Under Buttons, click + Add button and select Double opt-in from the dropdown.
A pop-up will appear asking you to enter the button text. Enter a clear call to action, for example "Confirm subscription", and click Save.
Complete the template and save it. The template is now recognised as a double opt-in WhatsApp template and will appear as an option in the Confirmation template dropdown when setting up a consent type.
Note: A template with the Double opt-in button will only appear when creating a double opt-in consent type. It will not be available for regular campaigns.
Step 2: Enable Double Opt-In on a Consent Type
Once your template is ready, you can enable double opt-in on a consent type.
Go to Innercrowd Dashboard > Settings > Consent Types.
Click + Create Consent to create a new consent type, or click the three-dot menu next to an existing consent type and select Edit.
Enter a Name and Description for your consent type.
Toggle on Require double opt-in (UWG). Two additional fields will appear.
Select a Confirmation channel, either Email or WhatsApp.
Select your confirmation template from the dropdown. Only templates with the Double Opt-in block or button will appear here.
Optionally, enter a Redirect URL after confirmation. If you leave this blank, Innercrowd will redirect contacts to a default confirmation page.
Click Create Consent to save.
Following Up with Unconfirmed Contacts
Contacts who have not yet clicked the confirmation link can be segmented and targeted with a reminder campaign. In the segment builder, the Consent filter includes a pending confirmation status specifically for this purpose.
To create a segment of contacts with pending confirmation:
Go to Innercrowd Dashboard > Audience and click Create segment.
Add a filter under Contact Details, select Consent, and set the value to pending confirmation.
Apply the filters and save the segment.
You can then use this segment to send a follow-up email or WhatsApp message reminding contacts to confirm their consent.
