Roles enable you to grant user permissions to groups of users. For example, you can enable providers to prescribe medications and create encounters, while preventing front-end staff from performing these actions.

A user in multiple roles receives permissions from all of their roles. For example, a person in a booking role that doesn't grant analytics permissions, can receive analytics permissions if they're also added to an analytics role. Role permissions also stack with user-specific permissions. For more details, refer to Modifying a user's permissions.

To perform this action, you must have the Edit Roles and Edit Other Users permissions. For more information, go to User permissions.

📌 Note: When you modify a role's permissions, the permission changes are applied to all users assigned that role.

📌 Note: If you are using role-based access control, refer to Managing user roles (role-based access control) for more information.

Steps

1. From the main menu, click Settings > Account information > Roles to view the Roles List.

2. Perform one of the following:

  • To add a role, click +New Role.

  • To modify an existing role, beside the role, click Edit.

The Create new role or Edit role window opens.

3. In the Role Name field, type a name for the role.

4. Optionally, in the Role Description field, type a description for the role. For example, you can describe the types of users who should have this role assigned.

5. Under Permissions, select the checkbox beside all permissions these users should have. For detailed information about each permission, refer to User permissions.

6. To assign this role to users, select the Members tab and click +Assign member to select the users. For more details, visit Assigning multiple users to a role.

💡 Tip: You can also assign a role to a user from their settings. From the main menu click Settings > Account information > Users > Edit > Roles.

7. When you're done, scroll to the bottom of the window, and then click Create.

8. When prompted, enter your CHR login password.

If you added a new role, it appears in the Roles list.
