This article covers the maths cloze automarked task type.

For a general overview of tasks and what they can do, see An introduction to tasks and for general instructions on how to add them to your course, see How to add a task to your course.

Overview of the maths cloze automarked task

The maths cloze auto-marked task is like a fill in the blanks task, but for maths equations, i.e. learners must enter a maths equation into one or more response boxes. The answers can be placed either inline with text, or on more than one line as part of an equation. You can also set up clozes for each stage of solving an equation for learners to show their working.

When to use a maths cloze auto-marked task

This task type can be used by authors when:

  • you want learners to input maths characters and/or equations, and

  • the answer is able to be automatically marked.

Watch the video below to see the process in action. If you need more, then follow our simple step by step written instructions.

Written instructions

All tasks load with an example task to give an idea of what each field is for. To add your own task details, you can type over the existing content in the fields or select Clear task content, to start completely fresh.

Clear task content button on right of task element below task type choice.

Standard fields

This task has the standard fields/options that all tasks have.

At the top:

  • Question: Where you set the main question/task which tells learners what to answer or do.

And at the bottom:

  • Hint: Add a hint to give pointers or clues to give learners extra guidance to complete the task. Learners can choose to See hint so it allows them to get this help “on demand”.

  • Feedback: Add feedback to give learners an automated response when they submit the task. See Writing feedback for tasks for pointers and ideas.

In between the top and bottom standard fields we have the following areas and fields.

How to set the clozes for learners

In the Text area, add the text, math, and clozes you want learners to be able to enter math into.

To access the Maths editor click the sigma icon (Σ) in the text formatting toolbar to input maths characters or symbols.

You can add your clozes or response boxes using the insert response button in the toolbar:

Toolbar in Text area of cloze task creation highlighting the r button for inserting response blanks.

How to set the correct answer for each response

As the maths cloze is automatically marked you will need to set the correct answer for each cloze or response:

  • In the correct box select the response you want to set the correct answer for e.g. response 1.

  • Complete all the fields:

    • Method: A dropdown list which shows how the response will be auto-marked or scored. Note that your selection here will determine what fields you see after. For more information see: Scoring math fill in the blanks (cloze)

    • Value: Where you input the correct answer.

    • ARIA label: Text that describes the answer used by screen readers.

  • If there is more than one correct answer, click on the + next to the correct heading at the top of the task to add an alternative response.

How to set the keyboard options for learners

This part of the task set up area lets you customise the keyboard shown to learners.

For most purposes, a floating keyboard with keypad hints enabled will suit. You can choose, add and remove symbols (groups that learners get to choose from).
