Notifications

Notifications in Iris keep you updated on what's happening in your Studio — things like Bridge connections, recordings starting or stopping, device performance issues, calibration progress, and more.

Updated over a week ago

They're designed to give you real-time awareness so you can catch and respond to issues without leaving your workspace.

Accessing Your Notifications

Click the bell icon in the top-right corner of the Studio header, next to your profile.

When you have unread notifications, a small pulsing dot appears on the bell icon so you know something new came in.

If you're using the Iris desktop app, certain events will also trigger native system notifications on your computer — even when the app window isn't in focus. These native notifications are not available in the browser version.

The Notification Tray

Clicking the bell icon opens the Notification Tray. Inside, you'll find two tabs:

  • All — Every notification from your current session, in chronological order (newest first).

  • Unread — Only notifications you haven't seen yet.

Each tab shows a count so you can quickly tell how much is waiting for you. Each notification card shows a title, a message, and a relative timestamp (like "2 minutes ago"). Unread notifications have a small red dot in the corner.

If you have more than 10 notifications, a "Show More" button appears at the bottom of the list. Click it to load the next batch (10 at a time).

If nothing has happened yet this session, you'll see "No notifications present."

Marking Notifications as Read

When you close the tray — either by clicking outside it or clicking the bell icon again — all notifications are automatically marked as read. The pulsing dot on the bell icon disappears until something new comes in.

Understanding Notification Colors

Notifications have a colored border on the left side that tells you the type at a glance:

Color

What it means

Green

Success — something completed successfully (e.g., Bridge connected, recording started)

Red

Error — something went wrong that needs your attention (e.g., Bridge disconnected, recording failed)

Yellow

Warning — something in progress or needing awareness (e.g., high resource usage, settings changed)

Blue

Informational — a status update (e.g., calibration in progress, driver loaded, new release version is ready)

What Notifications You'll See

Bridge & Connectivity

  • "[Bridge Name] Connected" (green) — Your Bridge successfully connected to your Studio.

  • "[Bridge Name] Disconnected" (red) — Iris can't reach your Bridge. Check your internet connection or restart the Bridge. (There's a short built-in delay before this appears to avoid false alarms during brief reconnections.)

  • "No Internet Connection" (red) — Your Studio lost internet. This notification stays on screen until the connection is restored — it can't be manually dismissed.

  • "Internet Connected" (green) — Your internet is back. Replaces the "No Internet" notification automatically.

Recording & Streaming

  • "Recording started" / "Recording stopped" (green) — Confirms when recording begins or ends.

  • "Recording failed" / "Recording failed to start" (red) — Something went wrong. Check your Recording Settings.

  • "RTMP streaming started" / "RTMP streaming stopped" (green) — Confirms live stream status.

  • "RTMP streaming failed" / "RTMP failed to start" (red) — Double-check your RTMP server URL and stream key.

  • "NDI Output started" / "NDI Output stopped" (green) — NDI output status changes.

Device Performance

  • "[Device Name] Performance Warning" (yellow) — The device is under heavy load. You may see buttons to "Apply safe profile" or "Keep Current Settings" right in the notification.

  • "Critical resource usage detected" (red) — The device is critically overloaded. Video may have been automatically paused. You'll see an option to "Re-enable video."

  • "[Device Name] Video settings changed" (yellow) — Settings were adjusted for performance. A "Reboot now" link may appear if a restart is needed.

Calibration

  • "Calibrating..." (blue) — Camera calibration is in progress.

  • "Calibration complete." (green) — All set.

  • "Calibration Failed" (red) — Something went wrong. You'll see an option to retry or switch to a generic driver.

Controllers

  • "Gamepad Connected" / "Gamepad Disconnected" — A gamepad controller was plugged in or removed.

Network Mode

  • "Cloud Mode is active" / "Local Mode activated" — Confirms when you switch between network modes.

  • "Cloud Mode connection failed" (red) — Make sure you have an active internet connection with enough bandwidth.

Bridge Linking

  • "Bridge Linking Request" — Another user wants to link a Bridge you own to their Studio. You'll see "Open Request" to review it or "Later" to dismiss. This notification auto-closes after 60 seconds if you don't respond.

Interactive Notifications

Some notifications include action buttons right inside the notification card. You can act on them without navigating anywhere:

  • Performance warnings: "Apply safe profile" or "Keep Current Settings"

  • Critical resource usage: "Re-enable video"

  • Video settings changed: "Reboot now"

  • Bridge linking requests: "Open Request" or "Later"

Clicking any of these performs the action immediately.

Auto-Closing Behavior

Some notifications automatically disappear after a set time:

Notification type

Disappears after

Performance warnings (non-critical)

15 seconds

Video settings changed

10 seconds

Bridge linking requests

60 seconds

Network mode switch warnings

10 seconds

Critical notifications — like losing internet or video being paused — do not auto-close. They stay on screen until you take action or the issue resolves itself.

Things to Know

  • Notifications are session-only. They're stored in memory for your current session. If you refresh the page or restart the app, they're gone. There's no notification history across sessions.

  • Duplicates are automatically handled. If the same event fires again, Iris updates the existing notification rather than creating a new one. So you won't see the tray flood with the same message over and over.

Troubleshooting

What's happening

Likely cause

What to do

No pulsing dot on the bell icon

No new unread notifications

Normal. The dot appears when something new comes in.

Notifications disappeared after refresh

Notifications are session-only

Expected behavior. They don't persist across sessions.

"No Internet Connection" won't go away

Your internet is still down

Restore your connection. The notification clears automatically.

"Bridge Disconnected" keeps appearing

Bridge is offline or unreachable

Check that the Bridge is powered on and connected to the internet. Restart the Bridge if needed.

A performance warning won't dismiss

Critical state needs your action

Use the action buttons in the notification ("Apply safe profile" or "Re-enable video") to resolve it.

Notification tray is empty

No events have happened this session

Normal for a fresh session. Notifications appear as events occur.

FAQs

Where do I find my notifications? Click the bell icon in the top-right corner of the Studio header.

How do I know if I have unread notifications? A small pulsing dot appears on the bell icon when there are unread notifications.

Can I delete individual notifications? No. You can't remove individual notifications from the tray. They're automatically marked as read when you close the tray, and they all clear when you refresh or restart the app.

Do notifications persist after I close the app? No. Notifications only exist for your current session. They clear on refresh or restart.

Can I turn off certain notifications? In-app notifications can't be individually configured — you'll always receive them for important events. Email notification preferences are being developed but aren't fully available yet.

Do I get notifications when the app is minimized? If you're using the Iris desktop app, yes — certain events trigger native system notifications that appear even when the app isn't in focus. This doesn't apply to the browser version.

What do the colored borders mean? Green = success, red = error, yellow = warning, blue = informational. The color helps you quickly gauge what kind of event it is.

Can I take action directly from a notification? Yes. Some notifications include buttons like "Apply safe profile," "Re-enable video," "Reboot now," or "Open Request." Clicking them performs the action right away.

Why did I get a "Bridge Linking Request"? Another user on your network is asking to link a Bridge you own to their Studio. You can open the request to approve or deny it, or dismiss it. If you don't respond within 60 seconds, the request expires.

What happens if I receive a red (error) notification? Check the message for details. Some error notifications include action buttons you can use to resolve the issue directly. If you need help, contact support@tryiris.ai.
