If you've noticed the Iris app reopening after you close your laptop, shut the window, or resume work, this is an expected feature, not a malfunction. It ensures that Iris services remain active for connected Bridges, live sessions, and remote workflows even when the main app window is closed.
Why Iris Reopens After You Close It
When you close the Iris app window (such as by clicking the red “X” or closing the interface), the program itself does not fully shut down. Instead, it continues running in the background. This enables Iris to maintain active sessions, conserve system resources, and stay ready to reconnect devices or resume workflows without needing to relaunch the full app manually.
If your computer goes to sleep and Iris was still running in the background, it will automatically reopen when the system wakes. This is part of how Iris ensures operational continuity.
How to Fully Quit the App
If you want to completely shut down Iris so that it does not relaunch on wake or stay active in the background, follow these steps:
Click the Iris icon in your system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).
Right-click (or Control-click) the icon to open the menu.
Select Quit Iris.
Confirm the quit action if prompted.
This fully stops both the user interface and the background process. Until this is done, Iris will remain partially active and may relaunch when your system wakes from sleep.
What Happens on Restart or Wake
If Iris is fully quit: It will not reopen unless you manually launch it.
If Iris is only closed (not quit): It will reopen automatically when your system wakes from sleep or is restarted, because the background process remains active.
This ensures that Iris remains available for background tasks like remote access or bridge management unless explicitly shut down.
Can I Disable Background Mode?
There is no persistent toggle to prevent Iris from running in the background. This behavior is intentional. Running in the background reduces startup time, supports continuous workflows, and keeps bridges or remote access sessions available without interruption.
If you prefer not to have Iris running when not in use, simply quit the application entirely using the steps above.
Summary
Closing the window does not fully shut down Iris
Iris runs in the background by default to support active devices and integrations
To stop it completely, you must:
Close the app window
Right-click the Iris icon and select Quit Iris
On wake or restart, Iris will reopen if the background process was still running
This is an expected feature that supports continuous operation, not a bug or system issue
