The following is a short summary of the habitat type and how to create/enhance it to a "good" condition. For an informed position, please refer to official up-to-date Government guidance or the UK Government's Condition Assessment Sheet.

Synonyms: Non-native and ornamental hedgerow

A hedgerow which is over 20% non-native species or consists of garden varieties of ornamental species.

If you wish to select this habitat on a habitat selection screen, it can be found under Hedgerows and lines of trees (see guide).

Key Species (for ornamental hedgerows)

A list of native species can be found in Annex 11 of this guide

Special Notes

Non-native species include species that have been introduced to the UK since 1500 CE.

Assessment Questions

  • Is over 20% of the hedgerow non-native species?

OR

  • Is the hedgerow composed of garden variety species for ornamental purposes?

If YES, then it is likely Non-native and ornamental hedgerow.

How to Create / Enhance to a "Good" condition

A hedgerow should be at least 20m in length, and be made up of more than 20% non-native woody species.
