The following is a short summary of the habitat type and how to create/enhance it to a "good" condition. For an informed position, please refer to official up-to-date UKHAB documentation or the UK Government's Condition Assessment Sheet.

Synonyms: Ornamental Shrubbery, Garden Shrubs

Introduced shrubs in a garden or park setting. These are non-native plants, meaning they have been introduced to Britain from all over the world by people, and they can vary in height. These plants fall into three categories based on their size:

- Tall Phanerophytes: These are the tallest kind of shrubs, similar in height to small trees.

- Mid Phanerophytes: These shrubs are of medium height, usually noticeable but not as tall as the tallest shrubs.

- Low Phanerophytes: These are the shortest shrubs, typically lower to the ground.

These shrubs are deliberately planted in gardens or park settings.

Landscape and Ecological Context: These shrubs are non-native, chosen for their appearance or other desirable qualities and added to man-made environments.

Key Species:

- Rhododendron sp.

- Buddleja davidii

Assessment Questions:

  • Is the shrub non-native (has been brought to Britain, from another country, by people)?

  • Has the shrub been deliberately planted in a garden, park setting or similar?

If YES, then it is likely 'Urban - Introduced Shrub'

How to Create / Enhance to a "Good" condition

It is not possible to enhance this habitat. You may wish to create a new habitat or buy off-site units.

Please note that this is a simple guide to help identify the habitat. For a definitive description, please refer to UKHab documentation. Joe's Blooms takes no responsibility for the content of external links.
